HI all, Mike Derr again... Couple of things... alt belt still off, new
Duralast 15350 or so belt... Squeal still there... we looked and took
picture and see metal flange part off of bearing seal of the engine fan! so
maybe the bearings there are squeling at 55mph under gas! makes sense as
when release gas then fan catches up to motor?? I'm not sure...

So how do I replace that fan bearing if that is what is it called? fan
clutch I see I can but that whole thing???? and bolt to fan???

Then item #2: Alternator belt is Duralast 17545... first 2 digits are
width! 15 or 17 mm maybe! anyways this 17545 seems bit wide for the alt
and other pullies! should I try it or get a 15xxx Duralast belt?

thanks

Mike

If I remember correctly, the first two digits of the part number is the width of the top of the belt in 32nds of an inch.

Based in that you would want a belt that starts in 15. It is definitely not mm. Our belts are 11 mm. wide.

ok great Ken, thx, I got a 15xxx and will install that today.

But still need to figure out how to replace that fan clutch bearing or the
whole fan clutch assembly maybe. Wonder if I can drive this weekend with it
as is? all it does is squeal over 55mph.

thx

you will need to replace the whole fan clutch. if it is the clutch that is making noise. i had a bad bearing in the alt. that made a squeal at speed. water pumps do that also. squeal is a sign something is going out. don't try to drive too far.

Mike,

Try to spin the fan by hand. It should move no more than 1/4 turn whenyou let loose. Usually fan clutches fail by either not engaging or staying engaged all the time. If you can't move the fan then the clutch has failed. Also check if you are getting drips of coolant through the weep hole under the water pump. If there is coolant the pump seal is leaking and you may have bad bearings on the pump. Usually when water pump goes bad you can hear a rattle noise when idling the engine.
