You have to remove the intermediate shaft by undoing the bolts at the upper cv joint and the pinch bolt at the steering box (it has to come all the way out as it also serves as a key). It's now an excellent time to clean and replace the cv joint lubricant.
Once the shaft is out, it's easy to put the boots over the intermediate shaft and fasten the top boot with a metal clamp (correct way) or a heavy duty cable tie. It certainly will help to keep dirt and water away from the intermediate shaft.

I think in past forums here it was Valvoline Synpower grease recomended to use to prevent binding in the joint.

Thanks Kelvin. I have saved the picture you send. 10-4 for on marking. Plan to
use 'cold chisel' to make mark on the upper flange for re-alignment. Seems I
read this someplace. I'm sure all will seem much simpler after I'm done. Thanks
again.

Be VERY careful to mark everything before/as you take it apart. I had
pink paint marker on everything. All you need to do is get one spline
(or ball or whatever) off and it'll drive you crazy trying to get it
right again.
No... I didn't do that myself. I was told to mark everything really
well before taking it apart and got to NOT learn myself.
The only picture I have.

I had to pound the blue shaft out of mine to refurbish it. Thankfully
the blue coating was in fine shape once I got everything cleaned.
