Yup, they only weigh some 6000 pounds, half what our GMCs weigh, so they get much better mileage. We all know that smaller engine (d or g) and less weight equals less fuel consumed to go a given distance.
While I was Assoc Director of a large r and d lab a hundred years ago several of my staff worked on the EV1 and GM hybrid projects. Turns out that weight is far more Important to mileage than most any other consideration whether battery or ice powered. At that time the magic number was around 1700 pounds. Problem is 1700 vs 5000 or more pounds at impact. The Smart designers put a lot of effort into the crumple zone to get that one around 1700 pounds in its several models and still survive the impact design spec.
Btw, Careful attention to crumple zone issues is not apparent from looking at the Vixon.......
