We were getting ready to leave Santa Fe and were packing the GMC. We went in for dinner and I heard a loud bang. I went out and the airbag on the driver's side blew.
I went to Albuquerque to borrow a used on as I had found a new one in Denver that I could buy. The one I borrowed was rotten and wouldn't hold air.
So I cut a piece of 1" plumbing pipe to 13-1/2" long and went to Ace Hardware and bought a length of 3/4" threaded rod and two nuts and lockwashers.
I inserted the pipe in place of the air bag and drove 450 miles to Denver. I got the new airbag in this morning.
The ride wasn't as bad as I thought it might be. The worst part was I-25 through Colorado Springs, CO. The road was so wavy and bumpy that my GMC was bouncing from side to side. All in all it wasn't too bad. Not much worse than some Winnebagos that I have ridden in.

Wow--that's alot of miles with a solid pipe in there--I would have thought that it would cause some damage, but it's good to know that if necessary, you can get away with it! When things cool down I'm going to try a rod with a couple of long truck urethane jounce bumpers to see if that can cushion things a bit.

I have always thought a slightly undersized coil spring with an air bag inside of it would be a good upgrade to the airbag only suspension on the GMC. If the bag were to blow you could still continue on using the spring only.

I saw that one presented at the GMC Eastern States rally last fall. I have not seen much else on it since.

Emery,
You were lucky. When we were at the Dothan, AL convention, we heard a loud bang one evening and didn't know what had happened. The next day Curby Robertson came by and asked if I had a spare air bag and said that bang you heard was my passenger side bag blowing up . We sat and talked for a while and we heard another big BANG. Curby looked at me and said that sounds familiar. He got up and went to the front of our coach and looked down where his coach was and said,"Yep, just what I thought, My other bag exploded." He found enough spares to get him home.

I had not seen or heard a price for the Southland system.
I was wondering how much the conversion would cost;
so I called them and asked. Reply today 9/1/2010 was
$900.00 for the kit with two bags and adapters. Replacement
bags run around $300.00 and are still being manufactured.
In my opinion and with the economy like it is these prices
could change therefore I have dated the information.
Charles.

I like the 4x4 chunk of wood. I already carry a few with me for other reasons. (Wheel chocks and blocking things..) I think I'll cut them to size and drill them for lag bolts. They would still work for everything I use them for but I would have them ready to go if I ever needed them.
I might even cut a old tire a fasten a chunk of tread onto each end. Need to think on this....
