ok first my house battery tray all rusted. I will order nice new one from
that company here on list.
but for now or this weekend Think carpenter buddy and I will jsut put in a
2x12 or whatever for the weekend trip. that will work right?
Then buy whatever batteries you all recommend. 2 deep cycle golf cart
batteries in series I recall is best???? I might be plugged in to 110 90%
of time, but when driving or nights or some rare times might need house
batteries.
then what store and brand is most recommended???? I have autozones or farm
and fleets here as well as most other stores as am in a larger or medium
size city :)
thanks so much for great advices.

Mike, if you have Sam's Club, or Costco, those would be the best deals on 6V golf cart batteries (and yes, in series). If not, Interstate is a descent supplier as well.

I bought 2 golf cart batteries from Costco in Livermore, Ca. and plopped them on the Duane Simmons Polyethylene tray that I'd bought some time ago. The batteries were $77 each, but they nicked me for a $10 core fee Grrrrrr. The tray makes sliding in and out very easy, and it is sized just right for my Palm Beast.
We will dry camp for a night or two over the weekend and these batteries give us plenty of juice for lights, radio, toilet, water pump, and so on.
I'm considering putting a solar panel on the roof to keep the charge up, since we have so much sunlight, and our dry camping is rarely more than 2 days I'm thinking a small one would do the trick. Also our Progressive Dynamics charger should be able to maintain the batteries very well.

The tray's are out of stock at JimK's, and Duane is ill, so it'll be a while. I'm waiting for one too...

I just purchased two golf cart batteries from Sam's Club (the local Costcos don't carry them around me), and they seem to do a nice job and have a reasonable warrantee.
The nicest battery tray I've found is the one JimK carries that has the poly battery tray mounted with heavy-duty stainless slides that allow you to easily slide them out for servicing. Not cheap, but very well made and worth the money (IMHO).

You will get way more energy per pound using propane for cooking and the refrigerator. If you want to remove the furnace that is your call. It does not weight much and you will not gain that much space by removing it.
Total electric does not sound bad until you figure out how much you have to give up in cost, weight, operational time off of shore power or running the generator at $3.00 a gallon.

Larry, 12Volt heat tapes? I'd be doudtful about how much heat they would contribute and if it was sufficient, how long it would work on batteries. Remember, Ohm's law. If something uses (draws) 5 amps at 110V to contribute 550 Watts, the equivalent at 12V would be in excess of 50 AMPS !!!! Batteries and other 12V stuff don't like this !!!!

Dan,
Have you documented your solar set-up, or do you know if there is a good resource for adding solar to the coach?
I should have started a new thread...

I have done same but many folks don't want to mess with led lights, especially if they are plugged in all or most of the time. My big "battery getter" is two tv's and recharging 2 laptops, after dark. I try to have laptop batteries charged before the sun goes down. My new one will run 6-7 hours on battery so that gets me to bedtime.

I am using two Sam's Club Golf Cart batteries, and they seem to work just fine.
The Optimas seem to be more prone to failure these days. I had some years ago that seemed to last forever, but the last two I bought (for other cars) lasted only a bit longer than their warrantee (which has been shortened by Optima). Nice batteries, but I don't think they're worth the extra money they cost these days.

I just did this. I replaced a big single "heavy duty" battery with two Costco golf cart batteries. These have the screw terminals and my local auto parts store had exactly what I needed. I think my cable is too long - the shortest they had was 14" but it worked out very well.
I replaced the positive cable too, since it had some corrosion.

Go to TSC. Here are a couple of jumper cables that will work for you:

I think Wally World has some hanging on hooks near the batteries.
