Hi all, Mike from Wisconsin here... been a few months... I have 2 issues...
need help/advice on, other is brakes I make another email subject on that
one next...

Ok, winter daughter and I drove to TX. we had squeal, we thought alternator,
anyways bought new Gates belts, and back home had alternator rebuilt, and
still have squeal.

Squeal happens >55mph ONLY under gas, so if I coast or remove foot from gas
pedal the squeal stops!!! Might this be power stearing moter? a bad
bearings? If so is that hard to change? or get rebuilt?

Thanks for your help and guidances...

Have you tried revving the motor in neutral to see if it squeels? I still suspect the belts and not just the alternator. If the fan clutch is trying to come on, any of the belts can be suspect. Have you checked the width of the belts to make sure you don't have the narrow ones based on previous threads? There are other things such as A/C compressor bearings that can do that and even though the water pump could, I sort of doubt that one.

humm ok Bob thanks, I will rev it in neutral... but I recall I ddi and it
squeals also! at pretty high RMP of course. but we go to RV and check it
from neutral. what would that eliminate?

not checked widths of belts.

why would it squeel at 55 or greater and then under gas anod stops
immediately when I take foot of pedal???

thanks

It can be due to inertia of the items the belts are trying to drive. I'm also wondering if it may actually be a whistle caused by a vacuum leak. If you can get it to do that in neutral, I would remove the engine hatch to see if you can tell where about this is coming from.

I had a vacuum leak that was a squealing sound. The mechanic sprayed oil around the intake manifold where it touched the heads. It stopped temporarily. That proved the leak.

Replace the Gates belts. They are too thin. Gates does not make a 7/16" belt any more, they take their 3/8" belt and label it a 7/16" belt. Also do not get NAPA belts. They are also too thin and are made my Gates.

My choices are Goodyear, Kelly-Springfield, or Duralast (made by K-S) K-S and Duralast are available at AutoZone.

Ken, I just replaced all my belts with the Duralast. At the time, I was told Autozone no longer sells them under the Kelly brand but that may be a local thing. Regardless, as you say, the Duralast is made by Kelly and the width and fit was just right (as was the price by the way).

Mike,

It appears that you are thinking that engine speed is a function of road speed. With an automatic transmission that is not the case. The combination of both the torque converter and overrun clutches can allow the engine speed to drop when no power is required.

The FEAD (Front Engine Accessory Drive - belts) load can change greatly with crankshaft speed - even if there is no apparent demand change. An alternator has a fan that has a square-law power demand even at a constant current load. The water pump and fan both have similar demand curves. The AC compressor does increase torque demand with speed, but has other considerations that make it hard to predict. The power steering pump has a pretty linear demand that increase with speed. In Short, nothing works in the belts favor with crankshaft speed.

Do what I have recommended from the very beginning. When shopping for belts, bring along a 10mm open end wrench to measure belt width. The belt should fit the wrench snuggly. If it doesn't the belts will squeel because they are too thin. I believe Good Year is the only one making the 10mm width. Yes, KS is also a Good Year belt. Gates are garbage, guaranteed to squeel. Also use a chunck of garden hose to listen for the source of the squeel. Make sure all the brackets are in place. I have seen several mechanics leave off the small angled bracket off the back of the alternator. Not rocket science.

Do not buy belts from Advance Auto as they stretch. I lost a lot of belts including a clutch fan from the belts stretching. I would have to tighten the belts about every 300 miles and if i did not they would fail.

I am now running Gates belts with no trouble. In fact it is the first time I have made two trips without belt failure. I adjust them between trips. These Gates belts were 3/8 so I guess they were old belts at the store. I used an Auto Zone belt on the alternator once and it seemed to be ok.

Speaking of alternator rear bracket, I NEED ONE! Anyone have a spare one I can buy so I don't have to drive 30 miles to the men's mall? I'm in 92117. Thanks.

Yes, the Duralast is the same belt with a different cardboard wrapper on it. It even carries the same part number. Our local AZ warehouse / store that supplies all of the others around here has a mixture of K-S and Duralast labeled belts in their stock. I was back in their warehouse about two months ago.

Phil,

Actually on a new (unworn) belt a 10 mm. open end should not fit over the belt. A good new belt is 11 mm wide. I imagine you could try to force 10 mm wrench over a good new belt but it would be a bit of a stuggle.

bit!!!!!

Can I take off alternator belt and see if still squeal? what to eliminate?
but that belt you all say?

can I remove lower belt? that one harder to deal with??? never done that
one!

thanks all, looking forward to no squeals.

not sure what to do on brakes yet!!!! maybe look at bake ones...

we want to drive it up north this weekend!

anyone in Madison, WI area care to help? I can pay some $

also house battery trey all rusted and has no battery there! I taped ends of
wires as to not short out! I have to try generator I guess also :)

Mike. I can't recall which engine you have but I would just ask Autozone what belt numbers your model year needs (ask for the equivalent Toronado year (without air pump) . As mentioned, use a 10mm open end wrench and double check the width--it should not slide over the width or top of the belt. Any and all 3 belts can cause a squeel.

Mike, what year is your coach? From 1973 thru mid 1977 the engine was a 455 and then from mid 77 thru 1978 the engine was a 403. The belts are different (except for the power steering pump). You should have 3 belts--generator, power steering, and air conditioning. I found the various sources of belt sizes to be inconsistant so just asked for the correct size at Autozone. As far as getting them off, that is a bit too much to describe just on the net here. Do you have a manual? If not, I'm hoping someone in your area can help.

More than likely someone removed the AC belt. The one that is not the
alternator belt is the power steering belt. The pump mounting bolts should
all be loosened before any attempt is made to adjust it and make very sure
that you don't pry on the filler neck or the resevoir. There is a slot in
one of the pump holes, and sometimes when you replace the belt, the slot
does not allow enough travel to wrangle the belt over the pulley easily. If
that is the case, take out the bolt in the slotted hole, move the PS pump,
put the belt over the pulley and then replace the bolt. I would also caution
you against putting a belt on the AC compressor and trying to run it without
checking to see if the front bearing in the AC clutch is OK and that the
compressor is free to turn with the clutch engaged. Don't ask how I know
about this. I can still smell the burning rubber from the belt.
