Took a short trip this weekend. 200+ miles along the Oregon Coast.
The first 60 were from Eugene to Florence. The newly installed fan
clutch just about ruined that 60 miles trip.
My engine tends to run about 190-195 when cruising. Outside temp
doesn't seem to matter much. 70° to 90° - the engine runs about 190°
The new fan clutch would come on at 190° and push the temp back down to
180° before cycling off. 7-8 minutes later the engine would be at 190°
again and the fan would be howling away. And not just the fan, either.
I replaced the Alternator and PS pump belts because I thought they were
worn out. Nope. I think this fan clutch simply hooks up so solid that
even new belts (and yes, they were nice and tight) couldn't keep it from
squealing. It wasn't as bad as with the old belts but still very annoying.
So we're going to see what Autozone says when I take this fan clutch
back. I'll settle for store credit! I had the old fan clutch with me
and installed it in Florence. I think it's actually working just fine.
Saw 200° during the trip and heard the fan clutch come on about then.
It wasn't nearly as loud as the Autozone-driven fan was, however.
So anyway... more of the same when it comes to fan clutches...

Dan,
It seems to me that if your engine does not overheat the fan clutch has to
be engaging.
Steve,
Is it possible that some fan clutches "spool up" (engage) slower and gentler
than others?

I am sure the one I have just free rolls. I have never heard it. I dont over
heat so I am not worried about it, yet. But one of these days. That is why I
am interested in some way to run electric fans without being such a drag on
the electricals.

Kelvin, I don't have a good suggestion for any one on this clutch issue but remember I had a 2797 that didn't engage at all and another that seems to be perfect. With this kind of variability I don't think any of us can make a decision other than most of us are fed up and disgusted by it.

Kelvin,
My experience with the Hayden 2797 was the same as Bob DeKruff. The first one I bought never came on. I took it back and the second one worked fine. Bob had the same experience. It is made in the USA but I think they still have quality problems. They are under warranty so they should give you a new one to replace the one that didn't work. I didn't have any problem when I returned it. They just went back and got another one. It made me suspect the problem happens too much when I was not asked any questions.

I have no answers, just information. When I discovered that my fan clutch was no longer working, I called Jim K and ordered one. When I removed the old one, it was obvious that it was a cheap after market replacement. I don't know what the part number is of the one I got from Jim, but it works like this: the engine temp. does not change appreciably. I have a digi-panel or whatever it's called and I am sure the engine temp can vary a few degrees before the little LED on the panel changes position. When going up a hill in normal warm summer weather, I can hear the fan start to spool up. The amount of engagement of the fan depends on the length and grade of the hill, but the temp does not move. If the hill is long enough or steep enough, the fan will go full tilt for a bit then slow down. I have had to turn down the radio to tell if and when the fan is engaging. I have not been out in extreme heat, that is above 90F or so, but plenty in the upper eighties.
I like the way it works. I am not complaining. Like I said, no answers, just my experience with fan clutches
Oh, I have a 455 with headers and fender vents on the sides. The stock radiator was cleaned and refurbished by a former PO when the engine was replaced a little over 20K ago.

Rob,
In all of the ones I tested, there wasn't any appreciable difference
in spool up time to total engagement. Nor was there any measurable
difference in the time it took to totally disengage. The Haydens and
the AC Delco 15-4949 spun at a much lower percentage of engine rpm
when disengaged.
If you are not overheating, other than the normal rise in temps
when under heavy load or surge temps at the end of off ramps, and you
are not hearing the fan engage, you have the fan clutch I would want.
More and more I led to believe that GM had a good reason for leaving
a large portion of the "hot" side of the radiator unshrouded. That
is where the hottest air is coming through the radiator.
We need to listen to K.H. after he gets an opportunity to test his
modified shroud. I bet the call to the Curtis's will be going out
shortly thereafter for them to make a shroud that uncovers the "hot"
side of the radiator.

I thought that was going to start yesterday. Until I pressed the brake
pedal and it was hard as a rock. Booster quit. New one's on the way.
Probably be next week before I can start road testing.

A couple of summers ago when I got my GMC going, it would get hot quick. At the time, I couldn't afford the good Delco clutch that Jim sells but I had a Lincoln MKVII or MK VIII electric fan laying around for my race car project. It has an excellent reputation for being a huge air mover among road racers.
I removed the fan shrouding and stock fan, fabbed a fan box out of plywood and bolted the Lincoln fan onto that. It never goes past the 1/4 mark. Works so well I just left it on.

I just requested that purchasing let me know when the Hayden rep comes in so I can talk to him. I discovered that we no longer source with them for just the reasons we have outlined (that sure was a short marraige). Apparently we have moved to Compressor Works and are having good luck so far.

brand Kelvin got from AutoZone that's so noisy (in the 2797 version).

It's the fan that makes it noisy, not the clutch. Now if the clutch is coming on at the wrong time, that's a different story. My current clutch is cycling the way I want it and yes, when it's engaged the fan is noisy.

I'll blame the heat since it's kept me from doing much of anything lately.
I've been thinking about replacing the booster because I'm pretty sure it's
the original -- and I'm getting weak enough to need the sensitized pedal.
:-)
Since I have a big reservoir, I have the boost pump on a manual switch. But
I can barely hear it anyway.
I only made it out of the driveway and 50' down the street before I decided
the short trip I'd planned was not a good idea. Even during that short
distance, I learned that my pneumatic parking brake really is a blessing --
when I wanted brakes, I just flipped it on and let the air do the work. It
pulls the pedal down harder than I can unless I grab the steering wheel and
pull in addition to standing my 220# on it.
