Duracool Distributor in Jamaica In The News !!!
Jamaica: realizing energy savings from AC while protecting the climate

In the search for measures to reduce electricity consumption associated with
the air conditioning units in the University of West Indies, Jamaica,
several units have been converted to hydrocarbon refrigerant, realizing
enhancement in efficiency of 15% to 20%. Hotels in the region have also been
advised to switch to the natural refrigerant.
Several air conditioning units, including window, mini-split and central
air-conditioning units at the Mona Campus of the University of West Indies
in Jamaica have been converted from HCFC22 to propane (Duracool 22a).

Savings from conversion at the University of West Indies

Econergy Engineering Services in cooperation with Rexham Engineering
assessed that by converting a total of 646 units totaling about 1,413 tons
of cooling capacity located in different faculties and administration
buildings to propane, savings of 350,039kWh annually would be realized. This
is equivalent to total annual savings of 8,272,117 Jamaican dollars (about
96,000 USD).

In addition, the hydrocarbon units require less maintenance and repair.
These two factors combined results in very significant cost benefits to the
university.

Other hydrocarbon conversion examples in Jamaica

Other conversions include the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica converting a
140 ton chiller, the distribution company Lascelles DeMercado converting all
40 of their mini split and central units and the University of Technology
Refrigeration Lab converting all their demonstration models to hydrocarbons.

Energy savings in Jamaican hotels

Results from a energy audits conducted by energy efficiency experts on
hotels in Jamaica have revealed that hotels can realize 25-30% of energy
savings by putting in place measures such as retrofitting their air
conditioners with hydrocarbon refrigerant. The audits were conducted in
cooperation with the Bahamas Hotel Association (BHA) as part of a regional
project supported by the Inter-American Development Bank's Greenpyme
program. With air conditioning accounting for about 64% of energy used by
small hotels hoteliers may expect energy savings in terms of a payback
period from 0.5 to 1.0 year for retrofits with hydrocarbons, and an average
of 2.0 years for new hydrocarbon equipment

That is a high price.

I buy it from Fox Tools Supply http://www.foxtoolsupply.com

It is $69,95 for case of 12 cans. Plus fairly low shipping cost and no tax.

That works our to a delivered price of below $7 per can.

They used to be $59.95 per case but have gone up a bit.

Fox tool is now under a new name and seems to be carrying a different brand of coolant. Try Worthington Ag Parts at:

www.worthingtonagparts.com

click on "catalog", scroll to the bottom to "search by miscellaneous category", select "air conditioner refrigerant, hoses, fittings and accessories". forget the manufacturer, click "submit" then scroll to the bottom the list for Duracool options.

The owner of Fox Tools died and his son-in-law took over the business. He merged it into his existing motorcycle business.

They carry HC12a because of the patent disputes with the Canadian company that makes Duracool. Buy American! I have been using HC12a for a long time and don't see any performance difference versus Duracool.

OK. I bought two cases just before the Pueblo convention last Sept and it was HC12a. Perhaps the son-in-law made peace with the Duracool company.

Enclosed with my next-to-last order from Fox (Bennett) was a note, something
to the effect that "...you may get HC-12a or Duracool, dependent upon
availability...they're the same...". Both that and the latest shipment were
all labeled HC-12a.

Yes, both Duracool and HC12a is a mixture of propane and iso-butane. Mostly propane.
However it is highly refined propane and iso-butane.

The propane that you buy for your furnace and refrigerator is not very pure.

I also got some refrigerant from Fox Tool (now Bennet Cycle) a few weeks ago, and received Duracool from them. I think it depends on what they get at the time.

BTW, when we pulled a vaccuum and refilled the system with 3 cans of the Duracool, it seems to work very nicely in my coach. I'll see how things hold up, but so far I'm very pleased (especially with the performance/dollar ratio). In another year, it may be time to add more evaporators to try to further cool the coach! I do like the look of that Suburban rear unit mounted in the rear, and it should help. Wish we had some Pick-A-Parts around here.

There are several Pick-A-parts around. One in Blue Island, One in Hammond, and another by a different name owned by LKQ in South Bend. I have never been to the South Bend one.

I have not been very happy with finding stuff at them locally. Anything over 10 years old get immediately smashed and sent to the steel mills in East Chicago or Gary. The price on scrap steel is way up and it is only a few miles to the mills.
