I think I read somewhere someone put a grease fitting in the macerator impeller body. My impeller freezes up when it sets for a while and I think a shot of grease on shut down would prevent this.
Anyone have any suggestions ?
Thanks

probably is a good thing. Those impellers look very much like a water pump
for outboard motors, and they don't like petroleum products at all. They
kinda swell up like brake parts do when you wash them in solvent.

i don't think that was a "lubricant"!
oh, you did say a "new pump" didn't you.

I opened the new box and the mascerator was all bright and shiny, and when I
withdrew my nitrile gloved finger from that pump orfice, that same visual
image crossed my mind, too. I wonder if our adversion to changing baby
diapers ever goes away? Inquiring minds would like to know.

When my impeller "froze" the first time I removed and disassembled the pump while silently, to myself, cursing at the %^&$&I% who put something down the toilet that jammed it up. My surprise, nothing was jamming it at all. I reassembled it using silicone plumbers grease and it worked great - for a year or so. Then the problem reoccurred. This time I applied the silicone grease through the outlet hole. Of course you have to drain the system first - unpleasant at best but, fortunately, my system is set up to retain the original dump system.
Finally, I found that using a screwdriver in the slot in the end of the motor and giving it a counterclockwise turn even a small amount is sufficient to allow the pump to run. I'm going to try Terry's method of a quarter cup of olive oil and keep the gate valve open.

I've just completed the installation of the macerator on the GMC.
I wired a DPDT Center off switch so that up would be forward or discharge, center off and down would be reverse.
I am hoping I am being forward thinking and it would help release the pump if anything gets stuck.
Of course, if the impeller is stalled because of dried crud, the reverse most likely won't work. But I am thinking if you open the sludge valve to the Macerator and let the muck get wet for awhile, it may just release itself....
Have not used it yet but its all in place..... I too kept the old system and added a sludge valve just after the "T" to the macerator, JUST IN CASE....

There is the possibility if you reverse the macerator you will spin the
shaft inside the impeller. The impeller is rubber, the hole in it has a flat
spot to match the flat on the shaft. I forced mine with a screwdriver. Had
to replace the impeller.JWHTM

I second Terry's concern. As the impeller turns, its vanes "lean back" in
the eccentric housing, so that some of the vanes are always in a "wrong way"
/ "locked up" position when you reverse the direction. One might get away
with forcing a new, flexible, impeller backward, but as they age and take a
set, they'll easily break off if turned backward.

Well, ok....
I thought I was thinking ahead but I guess I was thinking ahead to get a new poo wheel.
Thanks for the warning, I suppose I need to cripple that option.
