At 43, I just bought my first Brand New Lawn Mower. Ever.

After 20 years of using my dad's old McLane and more recently my Father in Law's Tru-Cut (Both REEL type) plus a few cobbled together lawn-boy's over the years (Those 2 Stroke mowers were great), I bought a new Toro electric start self propelled mower.

If anyone is looking, Home depot is closing them out at $276. They were originally $419. They appear to be a side valve (I thought they were all OHV now) but it starts right up. Couldn't pass it up.

It has a label: "Guaranteed to Start" Does that mean if it won't someone will come over and start it? LOL.

Now back to your regularly scheduled GMC.

The 19" Lawn Boy my next door neighbor won in 1973 and I bought from him for
$100 still usually starts on the first pull to trim where the 44" ZTR can't
go.

Hi Chris

I've have the same mower minus the electric start for a couple of years now and it does start on first pull everytime (unless you forget to prime the carb) I didn't think they had grass in AZ (VBG)

A couple of hours ago I started to ask why anyone in Arizona needed or would buy a lawn mover. Then I decied I should just shut up. Well now that time has passed I cannot help myself.

Why would anyone in Arizona need or buy a lawn mower?

It is kind of like the snow blower I saw in the Pawn Shop in St. Petersburg, FL a few years back. Why did someone buy it in the first place? I'll bet he was the only one on his block to own one.

BTW,
A year later that snow blower was still sitting in the same Pawn Shop for sale.

My guess is that he was fleeing the cold country with his few possessions,
(probably a psycho ex in the mix), got to Florida and decided never to go to
cold country again, hocked his possessions to get gas money, and wound up in
AZ, NM, TX ? Just a NSWAG.

I bought Lawn Boys twice, new. Both lasted maybe 6 or 7 seasons. They are fairly expensive - I once asked the lawnmower shop guy why they didnt last longer, he responded by saying they were only designed for 5 or 6 yr lifetime. Go figure. This past spring I bought the cheapest thing Lowes had, $115 20" with a Briggs and Strat. I only have maybe 2k sq feet to cut in the back. The huge front and side lawns I pay a guy 15 bucks a week to blow thru with his walk behind.

My "new" lawn mower starts first time and every time. Has electric start, because it's a 24v electric mower. Great for touch up work. 42" John Deere Riding mower doesn't get in all the little spots. Also, get some exercise pushing the mower, not self-propelled yet.
Wish that I knew more about the small engines, probably help when contemplating Mr. Onan and his buddies.

Ken,

I have a brother-in-law that lives in Sierra Vista. The front of his house
was all desert scape. The adobe block enclosed back yard is all sod. With
irrigation!

When the illegal Mexicans came to install the sod - he keep yelling "Green
side up"!

Can't get the NJ out of him!

Terry, what do you need a lawn mower for? If I recall correctly, you have

The RC mower was cool, but looks like it would take longer to mow with. I'd leave the handle on it so passers-by would take a second look.

As for Grass In Arizona, I live in an older neighborhood with a lot of lawns still. I converted my front yard to Desert, but I have 500 Sq Ft of sod in the back yard for the dog.

It isn't all sand and rocks here. Quite green, and it stays that way all year around. Rolling Eyes

Chris. I have been in same boat as you. I used junk mowers for a long time, or borrowed my dad's. Once my son asked me when we were going to get a riding mower, he was mowing our grass to build up muscles for baseball. Very Happy I told him when he left home. Well, he left home. I got a fixer upper riding mower, had to work on it all the time. Son felt sorry for me and bought me a brand new riding mower. I used it for 15 years. Good kid. I made him push junkers but he bought me a brand new rider.
Just pleasant memories.
