Geez O Ca-rumba !

What got me all cranked up on the engine temperature stuff along with the fan
clutch and thermostat is that AT THE SAME DANG TIME I put in my new fan clutch
and my temp gauge slightly rose, I found fluid all over the underside of the
coach and I thought I started to run so hot that I was over-flowing the
transmission fluid.

After climbing under the coach last night to look at something else, I found out
that it wasn't from the transmission at all, I must have blown the seal in my
power steering pump.

So now, I'm going to put in an accurate temp gauge, replace the PS pump and
start this evaluating of engine temp stuff all over again !

Can some one just shoot me !!!

I actually don't mind these types of issues, I figure that I will eventually get
to the point where EVERY SINGLE ITEM on my coach will have been replaced and
then it be more reliable than ever.

Lots to do this weekend, new thermostat, new power steering pump, new
Springfield Ignition system...............ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I can smell the
grease and anti-freeze already !!!

I look forward to Monday when Ray reports on what "might as wells" he did -- you know that PS pump hose looks a little ragged, clean the filter to the wipers, maybe I should get the electric wiper kit, upper radiator hose had been rubbing on fan belt, and on and on....

Don't get discouraged Ray--most of us have experienced your frustration, but usually the next day things don't seem that bad. Besides, it's better now than have it happen on the road somehwere!

Not having been on the road yet - just the anticipation of breaking down or
smelling anti-freeze while driving down the road excites me! And all those
spots under the coach at a rest stop...are they from MY GMC???

What gets me Ray are any oil leaks I hate to deal with them. About 1,000 miles after I rebuilt my engine the rear crank seal started leaking a lot. Not wanting to pull the trans to fix it at this time (wife doesn't want me living under the coach on a regular basis) I put it off. At 3,000 miles the damn front seal started leaking and the rear slowed a lot. I stuffed a rag behind the front motor mount so I could use it for a 200 mile run and not get oil all over. I looked underneath when I got back now what I see is the trans pan leaking and not the rear seal. I didn't take the rag out of the front yet.Makes you scratch your head and say what the hell.

Roy,
Don't blame yourself, it's really a crap shoot for even the most
careful assembler as to whether or not those seals are going to leak.
I use a good assy grease on those same seals in case the engine sits
for a long period of time before startup and some will leak, some
wont. However, the front and rear of the engine are the lowest points
and any leaks from above those points, always show up there so check
other gasketed areas. You might get lucky and not have the problem
you think you have.

I am positive of the rear seal . The front one pretty sure I need to remove the front motor mount assembly to be 100% sure.
I need to wipe down the trans to be sure of it but it doesn't appear to be the seal. I was thinking of getting rid of the trans gasket if that is the culprit and using blue or Grey ultra seal only what do you think. It is the stock metal one(I am aware of the ball peen hammer to un - dent the holes) All in all I will be pretty happy if the rear seal stays dry.

Roy,
Hopefully, this is just drill for you but you have been careful about
the amount of oil you put in when you change, Si? Nothing blows those
seals quicker than a bad PCV or overfilling.

For sure 6 Quarts I have 2 oil drain plugs and a calibrated dip stick. What do you think a black paper trans gasket or RTV only?
The PCV is new and in good shape Just a little lousy luck. Murphy just decided to come along for the ride.

Roy,
The RTV only is good if you apply at least a quarter inch bead, let
it "skin", then install the pan. Let the RTV vulcanize overnight and
completely torque the bolts the next day. Cut off the excess. Good
luck getting the trans gasket surfaces dry. Darn fluid will drip down
for a week.

Thank you Dan !

NOW....this gets even better......I go out and buy a new Power Steering pump,
but before I install it I was doing a few other things and guess what I found
out, it's not leaking, somehow it got over-filled.....probably by some idiot
named Ray. My driveway sits at a steep incline and I probably filled it in
the driveway instead of on the flat.

I tend to go the route of learning things the hard way.

On a good note, I installed my new Springfield Ignition System
yesterday.....took it out for a test drive.....SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEET !!!!!!

Also changed the thermostat, PO had a 180 in and I put in the new Robert Shaw
330-195 and changed the coolant while I was at it.

Now installing my Equus Computer Multi Gauge that will give me a Tach, Water
Temp, Oil Pressure, Trans Temp, Battery Volts. I'll have a REAL engine temp
gauge so I can finally figure out whats going on with my fan clutch, etc.

Thanks Steve that's the way I figured I needed to do it like you say it won't work if there is any oil present.
