Who knows whatever happened with Tom and his engine? He blew it in Columbia, Mo. back in early July. I have not heard anything from him. Has anyone else?

You asked so I'll tell ya and it was a very hard decision. 

Tom is a great friend/customer who I respect greatly.  As most anyone who
supports me I in turn do my best to support them.  When Tom's motor went down we
were just delving into our new plan for the roller cam motors where an
enthusiast willing to get greasy could purchase, install and have a warranty on
a performance motor for their GMC.  I was working with a new builder on
discovering what it would take to build to spec our motor.  The first 5 motors
are set to break in on a dyno for us to monitor consistency but when Tom went
down we were just into the preliminary stages of the program.   Actually the
first motor was slated for another person who had agreed to help us from the
recieving end to monitor quality and help me with putting together a "bible" for
the install process -- start to finish.  This was a great plan & I was excited
and flattered to have the help.

Hey, but what can I do, on one hand I have the methodical building of our
process trying to do better but on the other hand I have a coach on the ground--
needing a motor right now!  It's a case of the devil or the deep blue sea-- not
only was the person going to help me with my program but he was also slated to
do a seminar at the upcoming GMCMI convention on installing a motor in the back
yard.  That would have been a great program-- I say "would have" in that I had
to make a decision so I did-- do I selfishly direct the first hot shot motor for
our internal use and edification or do I support a man down on luck and make
life better for him--- I sent the motor to Tom in Columbia which lifted the oars
out of the water for me, for the gracious guy that was going to help put a new
feather in our cap and who was slated for a seminar to talk about the good, bad
& ugly of installing a performance motor in the back yard.

Ouch, that one hurt!  The one decision screwed up several plans but I had to
think about the greater good.  So the roller cam motor is on the ground in
Columbia getting ready to jump up in the hole.  The second motor is slated to go
up on the dyno on the 7th and I'm using this post to toss the egg on my face
that I probably deserve but what else could I do.  It's lonly making decisions
like that but the motor was still running in the other coach.  I may be wrong
but I think if one of you guys were on the side of the road you would have
wanted me to make the same decision for you.

Now, the seminar will be changed a bit, I had previously not though I could make
the rally-- just too damn much going on.  Now however I feel I have a comitment
to the club to salvage as much as I can for the sake of the rally.  Not sure
quite yet what we will do but I think I will be going to the rally if for
nothing more than to be a target for the pie throwing contest.

It's funny how things line up and how one decision effects so many other
things.  In one way we will still have our data on the motors.  I thought the
second motor was closer to completion and we could have made the timetable maybe
for the rally but having less than 2 weeks to R&R the motor, set it up and check
things out to rely upon it to power the coach to the rally I think is just
pushing things too hard.  I have a bad habit of pushing things too hard and I
have to say this is one that really bit me.  I may have this second motor
delivered actually to the rally where I can have it there as a prop for the
seminar-- not sure even about that but we will see.

I feel the program of having a motor available to those that really do want to
"do it yourself" is important for the community.   In the past, our motors had
to be installed by an authorised repair facility; it is very difficult to
support a shade tree install but I think it is a needed commitment and we are
continuing the program.  We have all but one of the first 5 "test" subjects
spoken for, looking for one more home.  All of these 5 motors will be dyno run
and broken in manily to assure the quality and consistency of the program.  You
have to commit to an involved process like this in offering something as
complicated and important as a custom designed long block motor.

So there, you asked--- sometimes there is so much happening behind the scenes
you would be surprise on how much crap it takes to get things done!

Jim, Thanks for the report. I was curious if Tom ever left Missouri. I was not far from Columbia yesterday and thought about him there.
Bring Nelson with you to Du Quoin. Teri and I will make sure you two get fed.

Jim, Great to hear of the owner install option. Woulda bought one if that was available a couple of years ago. I'm sure I spent more locally and have only a "hope for the best" warranty.
