Hi, has anybody got a copy of Leigh Harrison's 4-bag installation instructions?
If you do, could you please scan it and send a copy to my email address???
I'm planning to move the 4-bag from the '73 to the '75 to get it home,
but can't for the life of me find the instructions! I can probably figure
it out, but there are some details I just can't remember.

MAN! That's a LOT of trouble if it's only for a ferry!!! You DO remember
that the bogies have to come completely off, don't you?
If you plan to leave the 4-bag on the '75, it might not be so bad. But away
from home doesn't seem like the best place to do all the frame cleanup &
refinishing, bogie pin replacement, etc., that I'd do with the bogies off.
We can find you a couple of OEM bags for the ferry, if that's the problem.
I'm not sure I ever HAD instructions, but I'll scrounge around for them if
you REALLY want to do that.

If I were going to transport one as you describe and I didn't trust the air
bags, I would find a couple of known good used ones and install just the
bags with shrader valves at the bag, inflate to ride height with an aux
compressor, and head for the barn. On the road is no place to check all the
possible stuff that you can't measure properly when it is all covered with
road crud and old hardened chassis grease. Just my 2 cents worth.

Fortunately, there's no ferry involved, and it's in a yard in which we can work on it.
I did get a couple of used bags thanks to the generosity of people here, but the
system isn't in great shape and we're not sure yet if the used bags don't leak too.
It's not holding air even with shut-off valves (which might themselves leak).
We're running out of time for solutions.
You're probably right that it's too much work, but since we plan to put the 4-bag on
there anyway, thought it would be good to have for the long trip home. Or worst case,
we could bring the 4-bag along to have just in case. I don't recall the installation
being that onerous, but since I can't find the instructions, maybe I've just
blocked the memory. :-) We did it as part of a rear suspension overhaul, so
the steps are muddled in my mind (like most things...)
I asked Leigh for a copy of the instructions but got no answer
and we're running out of time.

Wait, I found it!!! I've looked, and looked, and looked some more.
But I thought I'd try one more time and there it is! The 4-bag
instructions! Sorry for the false alarm. I can't understand
why I didn't find it the first three times I searched... We
*never* throw manuals away, even when we no longer own the item in question! :-)
I'll post these to the photo site in case anybody else needs them.

Jim,
It's true that you don't HAVE to remove the bogies to install the 4-bag kit.
But with only two bolts left, and those the easy ones, it seems foolish to
me to not go ahead and remove the bogie to examine, clean, and repaint the
frame behind it. At least on mine, which had lived its whole life in the
arid SW, the alignment shims were little more than a stack of rust sheets.

I agree with Ken. That is a LOT of trouble for a "one way" trip.
(OBTW: Ken's use of "ferry" is to move aircraft from one location to another... normally long distance to a new "home.")
I'd borrow some some spare air-bags (as long as they hold air for 10-12 hours...) and put a Schrader valve (aka tank valve) IN each air bag. <http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=35021> Install air bags on coach (two nuts each), pump up with a portable compressor and go. No air lines to connect. A LOT less work, even if you have to add air during gas stops.
If you need it, I have one spare airbag near Portland. (I am not sure if the fitting will come out for the tank valve.) I also have the tank valves.

Ah, I thought he meant ferry as in Puget Sound get it off an island ferry. :-)
OK, I'm convinced. The schrader valve isolation is a lot simpler and
a lot fewer/smaller parts to carry than the 4-bag. I *think* we're
ok for bags, but won't know until we can air them up without all the
other system leaks. Right now, the compressor can't keep up.
I'm not sure what you mean two nuts each. One on each end, or two nuts on each end?? Or ??
Thanks all for the suggestions and generous offers of help.
In hindsight, we're amazed we got the '73 from San Diego to San Jose (~500 miles)
without serious mishap or breakdown, aside from too much excitement in LA.
The '75 has a nice clean rebuilt engine, so hopefully it'll make it too.
But this is nearly twice the distance. Guess we'll just have to try it and see.

KB,
After following all the repair tips, upgrades suggestions, and horror stories from the list serv over the last few weeks, like you I have come to the conclusion that our bringing a coach home from Virginia to central Illinois (especially with one that we knew was a project - which is what we we wanted - does the phrase "be careful what you wish for" apply here??).... was a pretty reckless exercize at best. We were lucky and made it home without mishap. Apparently our guardian angels were working overtime.
