There was a ceremony out here today where Speaker Pelosi, Secretary of
the Navy Ray Mabus, and Mayor Gavin Newsom signed the document handing
over Naval Station Treasure Island over to the City of San Francisco.
... and I was finally able to corner the right people to get my parking
permission!

Some of you have heard me mention this before but I finally have the
approvals needed.
We have space out here on the island during Fleet Week, the dates are
October 7th through the 10th. It's going to be dry camping but the
location can't be beat.

This is just a low-key get together, not a full-blown rally. We have
space to park as many GMC as are interested. The location has a view of
the Golden Gate and the City. Buses run frequently and take you right
into and back from downtown for shopping, dining, etc. It's about the
easiest way I can think of doing San Francisco in a GMC.

This is the weekend before the convention in Vegas, but I picked it
because it's Fleet Week in San Francisco. Perhaps this works well for
those of you coming from the North but everyone's invited. I'm told
that Fleet Week's going to be a big one this year with several U.S.
Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, Canadian Navy (celebrating their centennial)
and possibly some foreign ships available for tours. We'll even be able
to view the parade of ships from our coaches on Saturday.
http://www.fleetweek.us/Events.html

Of course, there's also the Air show (each day!) featuring the U.S.Navy
Blue Angels and many other acts. Even United Air Lines will be flying a
747 in the show. Watching this from Treasure Island in your GMC will be
a treat.

For the wine aficionados, there will be a "TI Wine Fest" on the 10th in
the adjacent space. There is also a local winery in the old Navy
Exchange that may be open for a tasting that weekend. The Yacht Club
will be having a dinner at their facility at some point and since I'm
Staff Commodore there, we'll be able to join them.

If you're interested in joining us, send me an email and I'll start
putting a notification list together. This is a "dry camping only
space" but there is a convenience store and a "bar and grill" restaurant
on the island.

Probably because I sent this from the email list and you're on the
forum. My email is 980@opg.org . This is the first list I've been on
that is replicated in a forum like that. It's a cool feature but this
is the only one I've seen.

Just sent off my RSVP. This will surely be a one in a lifetime camping experience to have all the Jets and Ships around while the waves lap up against the rear bumper! The weather in San Francisco will be Awesome! here is a sample of the view we will have. This will be quite a show.

ahhhhhh-- Nor-Cal Vans

back in the day , Gary Berry and I were at a Nor-Cal van run (before GMCs),
when at 10pm the music stopped on the PA system and the following
announcement came out

"would all the loose women report to the Nor-Cal compound"

well, sort of set the mood of the the whole van run, was a little hard to
explain to my 6 and 8 year-olds,(now 40+;>)
but it was an event.

Sounds like this could be a good "day trip" (with or without a GMC) for anyone in the bay area.

I have just checked my work vacation calander. There IS an opening for those dates. I DO have some time that I HAVE to use before the end of the year...

Now to check with the wife on her plans.

This MIGHT work...

We'd love to see you and bring the coach! We've got the space and you
really don't want to miss out on at least 24 hours of this view, you
know, to catch all of the sunlight angles.

Gene's already talking about an impromptu tech session or two and I'll
be leading a history of Treasure Island tour for certain. There's
usually a Friday night fireworks show, Saturday will be a party at the
Yacht Club.

I'm hoping that there will be a few junkets into the city. Perhaps I
can get my wife to lead a shopping trip. She works right by Union Square.

I've been putting addresses on a mailing list, let me know if you want
me to add yours. I've already started getting great response.

Glad to hear you're coming down for this. We're up to 12 coaches on the
list now. A couple of guys are interested in doing tech sessions so I
may reserve the Yacht Club for a night or two but for the most part the
lawn here is going to be great.

It's not "open season" on camping out here, I got permission by
promising that it would look like a one-design coach club. (the MCI or
Prevost club has been out here with a huge rally in the past.) I want
to have your friends join us and it should be okay as long as we don't
give the impression that boondocking here is normal. The Navy is still
out here and they have Department of Defense Police with a federal
ticket book that are sensitive to campers since the copper has started
disappearing from the buildings.

I'll work on this but I hadn't expected SOB's. It will probably work
out if we keep them close to our site.

If anyone else wants to sign up, send me a message at 980@opg.org

Sure wish we could make it. That should be great, especially with Fleet Week.

We used to live in Tiburon but moved to Santa Fe in 1993. You would have enjoyed seeing me back the GMC up the steep curved drive to my parking place by my house on the slope of Ring Mountain.

I am really looking forward to this Fleet Week meeting. 12 coaches is a Great turnout, but I know there has to be at least 100 coaches in the Bay Area, and another couple hundred within a few hours drive... Anyone else on the fence? I would love to see at least 25 coaches!

Intending to drive down from Eugene. I would guess there will be more
folks signing up in September.
Then again, a small turnout is fine by me. You get to know everybody a
bit better if there's only 20-30 coaches.

I got a message about the TI gathering today and I thought I should
share the answer since others may be wondering...

> Fleet week is really the best time of year to do this. The weather is fantastic and the airshow is exciting. The rest of the year the weather isn't as good. If I get roped into a club someday and they ask me to plan a rally I'd do it out here, but for putting one together myself it's just going to be Fleet Week. If it goes really well, I'll do it again next year.
