Hi All,
I checked my Transmission oil level today ambient Temperature.
The Oil level was five inches above full ,eight inches total.
I checked it hot and the level was about 1/2 Pint low, below Full.
I had ,always checked it hot.
The GMC Manual ,shows cold level, lower than hot about one inch.

Paul,

I think you just experienced torque converter leak-down. There's a
difference between "long time cold", "cold", and "hot". But "long time
cold" should become "cold" almost immediately when you crank the engine,
refilling the torque converter. "Hot" happens only after a long, hard run.

You really should check it hot. That will be most accurate.
The high level is from your torque converter leaking down into the pan. That is common and nothing to worry about.

Hi Emery,
Thanks for replying.
I always check the fluid hot.
Last month on a trip to Florida Panhandle ,going up a grade, the Transmission didnt want to shift to high gear.I backed off on the throttle and acellareted again and it shifted ok.
This happened on the way home also. Two times.
I checked the fluid level each time and it was ok.
Today ,I thought I would check and see if I could find anything, that would cause the problem.
I started, by checking the fluid level and saw that it was higher ,than I antisipated ,I thought maybe the Torque Converter was at fault.
running normal Temperature ,the level was ok.

I don't know specifically about the GMC MH but all the American made vehicles i've had/have specify that the engine MUST(capitals mine)be running when checking Trans fluid level. The fluid level being high with the engine off, especially for a while is not surprising to me.. I believe the real important part is that the level NOT show overfilled, engine running and trans fluid HOT. I would expect a normal summer drive including a bit of high speed would create HOT fluid in a GMC MH.

Check it with the engine running.
