Hey, thanks for the help, unfortunately, having more problems trying to get the 455 olds back together. Got new head bolts, got them all torqued down and set now seem to be having a problem with rocker arm bolts. Making sure lifters are not on lob of camshaft and still unable to torque bolts to the required 25' lbs. as in manual. Have snapped off 2 bolts thus far and that's only torquing them to 10 to 15' lbs. Anyone have any suggestions or cures for this problem? Would really like to use the GMC at least once before the snow flys but things just don't seem to be working out. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

Mary,
Did you chase the threads with a tap before you started assembly? Did you
align everything and then hand thread the bolts evenly until all bolts had
been started.
I'm sure one of the more knowledgeable engine gurus will chime in and give
you more info then I.

You are snapping off pedestal bolts with 15 ft lbs of torque or less??
No bolt should ever be attached to an engine without first cleaning
off the threads on the bolts, and chasing the threads in the holes.

In addition to the good suggestions other have given about clean threads -- check the calibration on your torque wrench. You should be able to install those rocker bolts with your fingers except for the final torque.
Please let us know what you find.

i would agree with Steve. 15 ft pounds is about all you can do with a 3/8" socket handle using one hand. those bolts should take a lot more force than that before breaking.

Mary, check the blacklist in NH. I found a guy there that had a GMC and
owned a towing service and RV repair business. He might be a source for a
mechanic for you in VT. If you don't find him, email me off net and I will
try to find his name.

Hi Mary
The guy in NH is Mike Glover, NE RV, very good, i've used him in the past but he's quite a distance, i would suggest trying Craigslist Automotive section, I found mechanics in there that are willing to travel, at least one was ASE certified, maybe some of the guys here can offer some simple questions that are unique to the 455 olds, don't be afraid to ask for references, and check them, good luck,

Speaking of calibrating torque wrenches: I, and probably Ken Burton, will
bring to Du Quoin an electronic torque calibrator -- a load cell rigged to
measure applied torque from a socket drive. Just drop by my site with your
torque wrench and be done in 2 minutes. The GMCWiperMan demonstration wiper
should be waving a US flag. :-)

Have snapped off 2 bolts thus far and that's only torquing them to 10 to 15' lbs. Anyone have any suggestions or cures for this problem? Would really like to use the GMC at least once before the snow flys but things just don't seem to be working out. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

I would suggest going to any GM dealer and geting his Olds V-8 technical reference manual. GM part #12480027 Or ordering from him. I believe He will be doing a seminar at DuQuoin.
Anytime I have ever called Him on a Olds engine tech question, He has always been gracious and kind, answered my question, then tells me "its in the book". If you get in a corner, call Joe. He is in the Tech Center every day.. 931-459-2760

Rebuilding an Olds engine without expert/qualified Olds engine experience is, in my opinion asking for trouble. Probably the closest experienced help is Mike Glover in NH, he has repaired GMCs for years.

Mary,
Something is BAD wrong when rocker arm bolts break that easily. You need
experienced OLDSMOBILE help or you will very likely wind up beside the road
with a blown engine very shortly after you get that engine back together.
I've personally suffered that fate twice with engines that were tampered
with by experienced, but non-Olds mechanics who didn't do the necessary
research to complete their knowledge. I was able to recover from both
experiences and build reliable engines myself, but I didn't have the very
fundamental problems you're having.

I know where you are coming from on trusting so called experts to build an engine. I got burned one time on a truck camper and that guy knew he was screwing me. These days it is tough to find a good machine shop that can supply you with quality work so we can assemble the engines ourselves .
