Back when I installed a new set of plugs the general consensus was that
the ACDelco R46SZ were a good choice. Considering I've had them in
there a bit longer than I should have and the coach still runs great I'm
a believer. About 12,000 miles on these - and yes... they've overdue
for a change.
I remember there was a recommendation for gapping, too. Some suggested
a big gap and others said smaller. I'm running one of Dick Patersen's
HEIs on my '73 455, if that matters. Hard to measure what the gap is
now and I didn't keep good records when I first started on this thing...
And has spark plug technology changed enough that the recommendation is
different now, 7 years later?
Anyway...
What recommended gap for the R46SZ
What plug might be better.

I have in my records that the old R46SZ plugs were gaped at .060
When I installed the new AC #7 Rapid Fire's, it was recommended to gap them at
.035

The AC #7 is one I saw recommended on Mr ERF's site "by Dick Patersen
and others."

Rapidfire #7. Gap out of the box should be okay, but check to see that it is 0.035 or 0.040.
Dick Paterson's recomendation and I run very well with these.

The big numbers like .70 were the initial GM recommendations that were superceeded by a smaller gap shortly after HEI was introduced IIRC. The fat gap made for a fat spark with the HEI under ideal conditions, but really taxed the system and encouraged the spark to find a easier path to ground besides the plug.
