I have an opportunity to purchase a trailered steel building manufacturing machine that allows the construction of any kind, shape or size of steel building; many can be completed in a day apparently (10,000~SF) and was wondering whether our fraternity would be interested in such an adventure. All you need is a foundation prepped - you can pour the concrete before or after assembly, sitting it on top of it or embedding it.

The raw material comes in different gauges, but I think 1MM is going to be the average; it also comes in a variety of colors and finishes (including raw galvanized).

The building shape can vary from quonset-hut to traditional barn styles and windows, skylights and dormers are possible, although the more complex designs will probably mean additional costs. The machine is computer-controlled for consistency & quality.

So, if I get into this, how many of you would subscribe to an affordable "GMC Gypsy" garage manufacturer making his way across the country, building one GMC nest after another?

I figure pricing the work at a 25% discount under the regular sources should assure lots of takers, but I could be wrong.

You Tell Me!

The first job I would do would hopefully be to enclose a certain central Florida GMC repair facility's open lot so that they can start working despite the torrential Florida downpours - or even an expanded facility, which might be better.

The bottom line is I would finally be able to afford to finish my GMC and take it on the road! Even serving as a full-time traveling home while putting up garages would be fine.

Seriously, there are two of these never-used, new-in-the-box units available at salvage prices and I believe it offers an opportunity that's hard to ignore.

Feel free to PM me if you would like to discuss in private.

Steel buildings are always on sale. Just like mattresses.
There are usually some still in the package "near you". Do a search on steel buildings. There are several mfg's.

Nice idea, but what would you do about the structural steel you'll need at
those scattered locations around the country?

Ken:

The supply side isn't an issue, as the pre-finished steel rolls can be had from any number of suppliers; I could have them delivered to the job site if desired, as the setup has an onboard crane to transfer and load these rolls, powered by a very nice Lombardi diesel-powered hydraulic system that runs everything mechanical.

I have a PDF presentation I have put together as an exercise; if you have the space for a new building and the wherewithal to take advantage of an opportunity of this magnitude, that's the starting point.

I have had several "interested parties" contact me via PM already and I will be posting the content of these relevant discussions, omitting the persons' identities to preserve their privacy.

I am going to post some relevant exchanges I am having offline and omitting the other persons' names to assure privacy. Here's the first party's exchange:

Interested party #1 question:
That is a nice concept, I have been thinking about a building for some time . A question - can the equipment produce the deeply-ribbed quonset hut type of structure that is self supporting? When added to the top of a knee wall that appears to give lots of usable space without any major compromises and can be erected quickly. Also has excellent snow load ratings and self-cleans. Is that design possible with this equipment?

Response to question:
The Quonset Hut model is just the beginning. Yes, it does produce the deeply-ribbed channels, among other optional styles whose vertical + horizontal loads are calculated and adjusted appropriate to the design criteria based upon specific use requirements. Each is self-supporting and I have pictures that depict not only a few of the styles of buildings and colors possible, but also the simple 10-step procedure involved in the assembly and erection; I am going to have a PDF file available soon. [like August 5, 2010]

Interested party #1 follow-up:
That is encouraging about the deep rib Quonset capability

Response to follow-up:
If I was at all intelligent, I would get 10 GMC owners to invest and for 50% of the cost of a commercial building, each gets get the garage of their dreams and I am assured the ability to build many more! Time is tight, however, so I need to keep my feet on the ground for now.

Harry and Howard:

I don't consider the pre-fabricated do-it-yourself kits that may or may not be stocked 'locally' to be in the same league as this opportunity, by virtue of the fact that you cannot purchase single-hoop kits because they are too large to ship by any means. That means you will assemble your kit with four, five or more panel pieces just to make one hoop that goes from one side of the structure to another.

The machine I'm interested in cranks out a one-piece "hoop' panel at a rate of 50 feet per minute; each hoop is joined to one another by rolling the seams under each other, producing a rigid backbone every 12" from side to side; along with the designed-in channel of each hoop plus corrugations and dimples required to make the gradual curve of the walls and roof and you are left with a very strong structure - one piece, without a single fastener!

The end caps, doors and windows will require fasteners, but hardly any compared to the tinker-toy kits "available locally".

Apples and Oranges, this is, I think.

I posted the PDF description on the GMC Photo site:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=35245&title=new-age-barn-raising-c&cat=5559

Let me know if the link has issues.

Thanks for the input, fellas - we aren't quite at the point of synergy I had hoped for, but it is a start. I just don't think I have the time needed to put it all together before the auction expires. That's where taking risks is an adventure!

I couldn't get the PDF file to show. Could be operator error, any help?

The auction is over and my silent partner and I decided to pass because of the short notice, there was insufficient time to secure a business loan. There may be an opportunity for this if they become available again, however I believe this was a unique, one-time only deal.

It would have also helped if I had additional time to secure commitments for buildings, but you can never count on that kind of thing, except to give you a rough idea of how far you could be disappointed when they all back out!

We now have the time to plan the business model and operational details as well as to shop around for ancillary equipment and vehicles necessary to run the business. The product is not available commercially and is only sold to world governments on the "good guys" list (which seems to shrink back and forth from time to time).

Thanks for the input fellas - this isn't over yet, though. Just taking a time-out.

Happy Indian Summer!
