I have been tossing around the idea of selling half ownership of my coach to someone local who is of similar mindset and mechanical (in)ability who could help me use it a little more. GMC had this as a recommendation to entice new owners back in the heyday, and it seems like it could be made to work. But is the cost (possibly ending up having to buy back 1/2 or ending up with a partner you never expected) worth the benefit (a few extra bucks to blow on something to putt around in the sky).

Has anyone tried joint ownership and has it worked out?

Randy,
It never works. I bought a car hauler with two other guys years
back. I, and one of the other guys needed it for the occasional haul
to the painter with a stripped car, or maybe a run or two down the
dragstrip. The third owner used the trailer relentlessly. He'd find
an old Chevy, buy it for parts, then call his son to bring the trailer
to whatever town he found the car in and haul it home to strip. After
6 mos of ownership, I needed the trailer and could not believe the
terrible condition it was in. Scratches, gouges, tattered license
plate, broken taillight etc. Within one year all four tires needed
replacing and my cost was one third, even though I had only used the
trailer once in that period.
Bottom line is, no one will treat your stuff like you do. Sharing
another person's motorhome is like sharing a toothbrush, it just ain't
gonna be the same when you get it back.

On one hand I completely agree with Steve. The possibility of everything
"meshing" are minimal to say the least. If there is a local event, who
takes the coach. If one member is extremely diligent with maintenance, a
conservative driver etc. and the other is trying to prove that it really is
a 12,000 hot rod - well there you go.

On the other hand, I have been joint owners in several pieces of
"stationary" shop equipment. I went partners in a large Tip glass bead
booth. We modified it a little and it will take a running board from a 1933
Ford. etc. It worked because I had the shop, the big air compressor etc.
He had the need for blasting, but was cramped for space. Then I moved to
the Memphis area and we were trying to figure out how to split this thing.
He still didn't have the space and was still restoring cars & motorcylces.
So, a 1,000 mile trip to do a couple of hours a glass beading didn't seem
too practical. So we settled. I took the Glass bead cabinet and he moved
an hour from Memphis - easy!

Clearly the exception to the rule...

Good Luck,

I have seen people try it with boats. Never works. One party usually gets stiffed with repairs and one usually gets the most use, rarely are the two the same party. It can ruin a friendship.

Also, who gets it for the local rally's like Tom said.

I loaned my tent trailer once. Then when I went to use it, I was fixing it in the dark because there was damage I didn't see before I left. I ended up selling it to that guy, who is also my neighbor.

If you are gonna do that, You's be better renting an El-monte (RENT ME!) RV once and a while. It really is like sharing a toothbrush...

It did work for me for five months back in 1967
for a boat. The other guy was a classmate at an
Air Force school at Keesler AFB (Biloxi, MS) and
our interests were similar. Basically, we used
the boat together almost totally. When we finished
the school, he went to Thailand and I went to
Germany, so we had to sell the boat that was only
those five months old. We had a great time, and
only lost about $500 from new purchase price and
considered that we sure as heck got our money's
worth from that boat!

I doubt that other circumstances would have given
such satisfactory results!

I only know of failed partnerships except for the family farm. I've been in
two others business-wise and it was a bad idea. I have friends who have
survived boat partnerships by getting out. If you really need the extra
income, rent it out, lease it, or whatever, but be sure to charge the going
rate, because you'll need at least that to keep even.

I don't really want to rent it because of liability.

I also know I don't use it enough to justify how much capital it is tying up. I use the coach maybe 3 trips year and an airplane I'd use probably once every other week or so.

Ideally I'd find an old timer with a plane who doesn't fly it and trade time so that neither of us has to sell in a down market.

Or I'd find a way for the calendar to slow down a little so I had more time to make that fishing license pay for itself!
