What we did, Carl...
Our mattress choice was one 4" layer of very dense foam with another 4"
layer of soft foam, topped by a 2" layer of memory foam. Works well for
us even without the memory foam. We got the foam at Fred Meyer in the
camping section. They are 30" x 72". We used 2 of each, trimmed and
placed to fit the space available. We liked it so well that we replaced
our home water bed with the same setup. Sporting goods places sometimes
have these pads. They seem to be just stacked somewhere, and you have to
squeeze and pick your desired density.
A fitted double sheet (for a really thick mattress) or mattress pad helps
keep the fir needles and such from sticking to the foam.
You can stack a soft one on top of a dense one on the floor at home, and
try it without the memory foam. If it doesn't work for you, return them.

Good Luck,

RonC
