On our recent trip to Silver City, we had the opportunity to sleep in the coach for seven nights. Even with the mods I did to gain more foot room ( http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showgallery.php?cat=5490 ), neither my wife, Kathy, nor I slept very well. Part of it was the leak that would sometimes drip on my head, but I think we finally narrowed the cause down to a too firm mattress.
The rear bedroom had been converted to a permanent bed by the PO. He had installed an inner spring mattress on a plywood platform, as many people have. It works great, especially with the additional foot room from my recent mod, except for the firmness of the mattress. I have heard some of the options, such as foam, a foam mattress with a memory foam topper, air beds like the Bear Bed or Select Comfort (what we sleep on at home), etc and am wondering how these various set-ups have been working out for others.
I was really disappointed that the foot board modification did not make much of a difference in the quality of sleep we get in the motorhome and would like to remedy the situation,

We use a memory foam topper, $99 from SAMs club. Made a huge difference for us!!

Like a couple of others, we bought a 5 inch mattress topper from JC Penny. On ours, we put a waffle pad on top along with a pretty thick mattress pad. It is very comfortable and definitely not too firm - if anything is is too soft. We had two waffle pads on top of the pad at first but that was way too soft - the bed is a permanent bed made from plywood - and we may even remove the remaining waffle pad.

PO put in the plywood you mention. We bought a mattress (no box springs) from JC Penny. Not sure which one. They insisted on delivering. It was interesting to see the guys put it in. I told them they would have to bend it a bit. Other than it is not quite as big as we would like, we are sleeping well.

Carl,
Nancy and I have been down that road. SHE loves those memory foam
toppers, I hate them. Too darn heavy and lifting the bed to work on
anything back there is a real strain, not to mention the altitude it
adds for the inside person who has to get a leg over the other person
and plant a foot of the floor for those midnight calls. We finally
found a foam mattress that was variable density, and light and that
did the trick.
We also have a Select Comfort at home and would never consider
anything else. We bought a Bear bed for the SOB and love it. The
controls are much better than SC. One of the members here wrote that
Bear bed will make them any size you wish for no additional expense.
They are already considerable less expensive than the SC ones so I
would say this is the way to go. Chuck and Mary Botts used to spend
months at a time on the road in their 23' and they have a stowable
Bear bed and Travasak combination that really helps with Chuck's back
problem.

We also used Memory Foam from Sams, ($130.00) it is a 4 inch Queen
that I cut to fit the two twin beds. I put the foam on top of two
regular twin mattresses. It makes a world of difference.

We had a rear twin royale that we converted to a rear king by bridging the twins
with plywood, we sleep with our heads to the back window. We purchased a king
2" memory foam sheet and then a king memory foam wedge that went from 2" at our
feet to 6" thick at our heads, both from Overstock.com for a total price of
under $150. Lisa and I both like the coach bed better that our bed at home,
really really comfortable and we sleep incredibly well on it.

So your head is 4" higher than your feet, huh? Interesting. I can see how that might be more comfortable then totally level.
