Bob,
The one I installed is 1/4 inch thick and replaced the stock carb to manifold gasket which is about 1/4 inch thick.

The post earlier about installing sleeves on things to protect them from heat from headers made me wonder if headers contribute to vapor lock. I have stock exhaust manifolds on my rig because I don't like the heat given off by headers. I have only one car with headers and it came from the factory with the pipes wrapped in an insulating tape and has heat shield to keep the heat from the top of the engine. I have a friend in the coating business and he claims he can coat headers and they will run so cool you can put your hand on them when running. Don't know if it is B.S.

Maybe someone will do a survey to see how many GMC,s with vapor lock have headers.
Jim

Can anybody advise how much extra length exists
on the carb mounting studs? Enough to add the
1/2 inch spacer? Or are bolts use for mounting?

Coach is in a gravel storage lot and temps are
running over 100 F, or I'd go check myself.

Yeah, I know I'm a candya$$. I don't handle
such temperatures very well at 72.

There are at least two Mr. Gasket kits for the Quadrajet, a 1/4" and a 1/2.

I suppose bigger is better if it fits.If it doesn't you could just leave out
a layer or two. $17 at Summit.

Watch the clearance to the underside of the engine cover. i suspect a lot of
loose Qjets get help from rubbing on the hatch.

Mac,

The QJ mounts to the manifold with bolts so you can stack up as much as you
like under it and just get longer bolts.

Unfortunately there is not a lot of clearance between the top of the air
cleaner and the bottom of the engine hatch.

To check it accurately you can take out your wheel well liners and measure
it.

PS - I have installed the Mr. Gasket kit (I think it's 1/4" or so thick)
under my QJ on an aluminum manifold and have no clearance issues.

Thanks, Rob.

I think I'll just order the 1/2 incher and pull out as many
intermediate layers as needed for clearance as Bob Kruyff
suggested.

You DO NOT have to remove a wheel well liner in order to ascertain the air-cleaner-to-hatch clearance.

Simply do it this way:

1. Obtain some plumber's putty or modeling clay; make three 2" balls out of it. Make sure it isn't sticky - coat them lightly with vegetable oil.

2. Open the engine hatch and place the three clay balls on top of the air cleaner, distributed equally around the lid.

3. Close and latch the lid; open it again and you will have three squashed balls indicating exactly how much clearance you have in your particular coach.

Remember, don't assume that your clearance will be the same as some other owner's dimensions:
Our coaches have varying sizes and styles of cut-outs routed into the underside of the plywood for air cleaner clearance - each one varies by year sometimes and PO's may have done something that affects the clearance (e.g., carb spacers, motor mounts, insulating body pads and mounts, air cleaner assembly, intake manifold, etc.)

That's a great idea, but you might want to stand on the hatch to be certain
your clay is squashed adequately. Other wording came to mind, but I chose
"clay is."
