I've considered these mini split systems, but have always wondered: where would you put the outside unit?
They're pretty big, roughly 30" x 21" x 10", and I assume have to be mounted vertically and well ventilated.
thanks,
Karen

I have seen some units that are mounted with the deep side down, I have seen them at the front of the van and and the rear. By a guess, i would think it was only about 6 to 9 inches tall and about the width of the van top. I dont think they look that bad, the one in the rear looks sort of like a spoiler.
See you you can download the user manual / install manual and read it cover to cover. that should tell you what you need to know.

Roger, Good list, gives me a place to start. Thanks.
All,
For a quick look, it looks like only smaller single units are 115v. (9000 to 12000 btu) The larger units take 208/230v. Some appear to be DC powered on the insides. (36v) I'll look some more...
The outside unit could be mounted against the rear of the coach behind the spare tire... maybe recessed into the coach body. Ya think that it could exhaust enough air through a "hotshot" type wheel?
I do not think most of the outside units can be laid flat on the side. (At least the ones I have looked at the manual.) The compressor appears to be to tall and I understand they do not like being that far off-level. (90 degrees is a bit much!) But as a low profile roof top unit is only about 7 to 8 inches tall, there might be a flat packed type unit that could be mounted under the floor... maybe in the "wasted" space (in GMC upfitted coaches) aft of the black tank.
Grunaire seems to be located in Floria. Maybe someone could talk them into an "RV product line."

I am looking at doing this too, as the roof units are crap. I have seen 115V units as high as 15K BTU. I will mount my Condensing unit on the rear bumper to the left of where the spare should be. I have considered laying it flat on the roof, and rotating the compressor vertical, through a hole in the top with a sealed cap of some sort, but not sure how well the cabinet in this orientation can protect the electronics from rain.
There is also the possibility to use an autotransformer for the larger units. We discussed this a while back.
Bottom line, I think even a single 12K BTU one of these is probably orders of magnitude better at cooling the coach than the repackaged window units on our rooftops.
On Rooftop units, I think that running both indoor and outdoor fans with the same motor is a bad idea. I want low flow inside to allow the heat to more completely be extracted by the evaporator and the outdoor fan to run fast to expel the heat faster. Maybe a couple of radiator fans up there would help..

Yeah, the seer rating of tn RV unit is probably around 5 or 6. Efficiency does equate to better cooling. I replaced 9.5 Seer unit with 15 Seer on my house. lower electricity usage and much cooler in the house.
The mitsubishis are bearly audible when running. They are engineered this way since they are usually on balconies and such.

If the unit you are looking at does not state what its SEER rating is
be afraid, very afraid.
Mine (at 19 SEER) will freeze us out and runs on a 15 amp circuit breaker.
