Has anyone put in a 8.1 into their rig? Puts out 345 HP with no add ons.

I was planning on getting a rebuilt 454 but an hot rod buddy recommended
putting this in instead.

Any thoughts and or impute?

Contact Dave Lenzi, he has developed the kit to install the 8.1 in our
coaches. The swap has been done and all the bugs have been worked
out. Not for the novice, requires machine work on the block with the
special jig that he has.

The correct 8.1 with computer, harness and accessories are hard to
find at a reasonalble price, not all 8.1 will work.

Yes its a Hot Rod with plumbing, but not that kind of Hot Rod.

It's an incredable engine. A real "truck" engine and designed as such. 496ci, is a bored and STROKED 454. Roller lifters. Fuel Injection. A 454 is 4.25 bore with a 4 inch stroke. The L18(GM designation) is a larger bore with a 4.25 stroke. Stroke means torque. A 455 olds is under square,ie. more stroke than bore. I considered it but went with the Caddy because of the fabbing of the pan, block adaptor and oil pan. I'm an electrician. Daves a toolmaker. His intallation(haven't seen but photos)is first rate and really nice. Might be at Duquoin, come see it.,,,,PL

Howard,

I agree with you vis-à-vis the hot rod 454, it would depend on the cam
Cameron selected.

The 8.1 engine puts out 411 foot pounds of torque at 1200 rpm!

Here's a link to the torque / hp chart.

I had the pleasure of driving Dave's 8.1 and I can assure you that it GOES!

Here are the number on our 455.
Torque 464.0 at 2200 rpm, 477.1 at 3100 rpm
H P 349.4 at 4600 rpm.
With our rigs we don't need no "Stinking Horse Power"
We need Torque.
So why spend the $'s on 454.
Yes if I where building a street rod I may look at a Chevy B B engine.
Or a Cad 500 also a North Star engine.
As for now I'll stay with Olds.
We ran 455 jet boats and kicked some A** in the 70's and 80's on the lower
Colorado river.
After that the big out boards came along and started to kick our!
