My gasket leaks and I must replace it. How far must I withdraw the diff? Must I remove the drive axles?

Yes, you need to move the diff back far enough to clean the trans and diff
mating surfaces. BUT before you do that, check to see if your vent at the
top diff cover bolt is plugged. If it is, it will leak every time. You don't
have to remove the axles themselves, just the jackshaft on the pass side and
the inboard cv joint bolts on the drivers side as well as the trans dipstick
tube. Leaking gaskets are a PITA. One suggestion that comes to mind is to
check the fluid that is leaking. If it is transmission fluid, one possible
source is the back to back seals between the trans and diff. or the upside
down u shaped transmission vent on top.
