We are planning an excursion that will take us through Canada

Same here. My question is about crossing over the boarder both ways: Does
anyone check the VIN to the registration going either way?? The reason I
ask is that NC refuses to give me a plate unless I have my vehicle
inspected by a state certified station first. My coach has been in Oregon
for the last 5 years, just sitting. It is insured and has been all 5
years. I plan on using my daughter's NC plate and registration for the
trip; she has a 73 GMC and mine is a 78. I guess I could always say I got
the registrations mixed up since both are in my name and on the same
insurance policy.

There were probably 20 GMC's from US side that attended a rally in Canada last spring, To my knowledge no one had any hassel either going or coming. I regularly cross into Canada and in the last 40y have never been asked for any info on the auto, Passport is required to re-enter the US.

What is a CANADIAN Insurance card? One issued by a Canadian insurance company? and how do you get one? There may be requirement to proof of valid insurance but I sure have never been asked. Maybe they think Alabama is another country,LOL

Sandra ~
The last time we crossed Calais Maine / St Stephen New Brunswick
After inspection we had to either leave all spare parts {Alt, Waterpump, air bag, etc} at customs OR Post $2500.00 Cash Bond
so we returned there 2 weeks later to pick up all of the tagged spare parts we had left at that Customs Shed ~ I Kid You Not ~
maybe because it was only 9 months after 9/11 ~
Tnspections at Detroit's Ambasador Bridge & Sault St Marie ~
We have found that it is Quicker and far easier to cross
at Port Huron Michigan / Sarnia Ontaria ~

I'd say to check with your insurance company about coverage while in Canada.

Hi JR,

I'm thinking you should seriously consider reconsidering as should you have an accident (hopefully that doesn't happen) or be stopped for something like speeding ( more likely Embarassed ) you will not be a happy camper at the outcome and potential hassle either in Canada or in the U.S.

Just a thought

I'm shocked by all of this. I used to live in Sarnia as well as Flint Mi and have crossed the border dozens if not hundreds of times with my GMC--I have never encountered any of this BS.

The rules do not change. You follow the rules where the vehicle was last titled. If it is licensed and titled in your name in Oregon, you are free to go.

If it is not licensed, then ask Oregon about a permit to transport it out of state. Then call the Canadian CBSA (Canadian Border Services Agency) and ask them for sure if they will honor that temporary permit.
http://www.cbsa.gc.ca
I know you will require proof of insurance if you have an accident or get stopped by the RCMP or other police.

I hate to use the term ALL but all US insurance companies that I know of cover you while traveling in Canada. Canadian liability minimums are $200,000 everywhere except Quebec which is only $50,000. No one checks at the border. You will need proof of insurance if involved in an accident or traffic violation.

40 or 50 years ago, for traveling in Canada we use to be able to get a card from our US insurance companies translated in both French and English. They were not a required item. I have not seen one in years but you might still be available to get one for free from your insurance company. I do not know anyone who uses them any more.

I'm not in a border state but I do travel in and out of Canada 3 or 4 times per year. With a few minor exceptions it is not any different than traveling to Pittsburg or Atlanta. You stop at the border, show appropriate ID, answer a few questions, and go on your way. One time 3 years ago I crossed the same low volume border point (Dunseith, ND) 6 times in 3 days. The last time I crossed the lady just waved me (with my Indiana plates) through. It is not much different than driving here. The speed limits are in kmph, no handguns, and you have to be able to say "eh", "about", and "centre" correctly.

I would not travel with incorrect plates across the border though the chances of being stopped are small.

Joe, maybe in the interval since 9-11 they have relaxed their requirements.
Coming back into CA the other day, we told them how much wine we had (two
five-litre boxes + one bottle) and they pulled us over for a search. The
search was mediocre. Told Bob they were looking for alcohol. Not real
friendly, but one was ok. Never asked for dog papers. It was about our
fourth crossing since June 29. We thought maybe the search was because of
so many recent crossings and our TX plates.

By the way, where do you live in Alabama? I grew up there and I think we
may be cousins...

Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another, be sympathetic, love

Joe, maybe in the interval since 9-11 they have relaxed their requirements.
Coming back into CA the other day, we told them how much wine we had (two
five-litre boxes + one bottle) and they pulled us over for a search. The
search was mediocre. Told Bob they were looking for alcohol. Not real
friendly, but one was ok. Never asked for dog papers. It was about our
fourth crossing since June 29. We thought maybe the search was because of
so many recent crossings and our TX plates.

By the way, where do you live in Alabama? I grew up there and I think we
may be cousins...

One time I crossed the border 6 times in three days at the same border crossing station. Two times I had Canadians riding with me. On the last time when I finally went home the lady in the booth (US side) recognized me and just waved me through.

One of the times was a beer run to a local roadhouse we were only gone about 15 minutes. One was a run to the hardware store. The lady in the border crossing booth gave us directions on where to find two local hardware stores.

Some people live on one side and work o the other. They go in and out every day. I have one Canadian friend that makes one trip per week to pick up shipments from UPS on the south side of the border.

I do not think the number of times you cross makes much difference.

The Canadian Boarder Services were told by the US Government to tighten up
our boarder policies. We were being accused of allowing undesirables into
our country who would then enter yours. We all know the stories.

What you are getting is what you wanted.
