Is there an electric fuel pump preferred to run this
455 with HEI, without a mechanical fuel pump? Having problems with vapor lock/ sputtering with the Mr. Gasket fuel pump currently pumping.

Sir: Long story.. short version.. Maybe try blowing shop air back thru the tanks (with the fuel cap off) to clear the sock filters or even blow them off if you are lucky. Add an inline clear filter in front of the selector valve and replace the filter in carb. Check your lines for any kinks or twists. It really helped me.

JoAnne,
What Chuck's telling you is that your Mr. Gasket pump may well be adequate
but is being starved by clogged filter socks in the tanks.
If, after following his suggestions to be sure there's adequate supply to
the pump, you still want to replace it, my preference is for the Carter
4070. They've served me well for the past 12 years.

my coach came with an off brand elec. pump. it quit working and i took it apart. inside i found all the rubber seals and diaphragm were turned into bubble gum. the diaphragm was missing all together. i suspect ethanol gas ate them. i replaced it with the 4070 Carter. i hope it won't do the same thing.

I think I remember that the magic number for fuel pump capacity for the 455 is 90 gallons per hour. the cheap electric ones are much less than that and can't deliver enough gasoline when you are giving a lot of gas pedal or on a steep climb.

Thanks Gene.. Thats the # I was looking for. As the stock mech pump delivers 40 gph I was going to use the Mr Gasket pump rated at 80gph. I have found a carter mech pump #CRT-M6108 rated for 120 gph at 5.5 - 6.5 psi without the vapor return. I`ll let you know how it works out.

According to my Sun Tuneup sheet for 1973 Oldsmobile (all models except
Omega) 455 c.i. W/ 4-BBL carb
the Fuel pump is:
Pressure - 5.5 - 6.5 psi
volume @ Cranking Speed - 1 pint in 20 seconds
I can't find a spec for cranking speed on this sheet.
JEG's says that the Carter P4070 is 4-6psi and 72 gph FREE FLOW

Well: acording to Carter the CRT-M6108 at Summit on line is rated for 25 gph NOT 120 gph. So no go there... Holly 12-836 is rated for 80 gph as is the Mr Gasket. Also the Summit 250009-1 @ 110 gph is not available for the Olds as advertised on line only 80 gph. It is stamped "USA" but according to Summit tech line it is made in China. Looks like it as there is casting holes in the inlet and outlet threads. As usual I have spent all day achieving nothing. So never mind. But I`ll be back.....
