Netters
This morning as I was looking for a 4 pin connector at the generator, I
reflected back to earlier this summer when on two seperate occassions, 2
guys in this province died when their cars fell off the jack !
At the time I said to myself, "How could they be so stupid?"
This morning I slid under the generator...for just a second... to determine
if what I was seeing was the sought after 4 pin connector....and then a
light came on!
Air bags don't announce that they will be blowing and when they do, there
isn't enough room between the frame and the ground for my fat head....then
someone would say about me, "How could he be so stupid!"
Soooo, the moral of my story is ...always keep a Jack Stand handy and Use It
! Just a thought.

Mike--I've always had a phobia about crawling under a coach or car. A couple of years ago I had an airbag explode as I was about 20 feet away. That certainly made me even more cautious. During my career at GM, I've seen two cars fall off hoists. I certainly agree with your caution!!

Michael, I've spent about 55 years crawling under things and always followed your good advice. But about 2 months ago I had a brain fart. I had just bought a used tow dolly and was replacing the electric brakes and wheel bearings. The fact that it wasn"t very big is what enabled my stupidity and I lifted it with a bottle jack and proceded to remove the backing plate with a 3/4"
open end wrench. The nuts were so close to the axle that a box end would not go on the nut. After tugging on the wrench and not breaking it loose I reasoned that I could stick the wrench in from the bottom and strike it with my hand to generate more power. That proved to be correct assumption except all that force spun the dolly on the other wheel knocking over the bottle jack. As the trailer fell, the box end part of the wrench landed on the inside of my thumb which pinned me to the concrete. Being as I have always been a macho guy I laid there calmly considering my options. I found out that I couldn"t lift it off pretty quick so I went to option number 2 immediately! I started calling my dear wifes name. Actually I started screaming her name as it dawned on me that she is hard of hearing. After 5 more minuets my macho was wearing thin and all my twisting and turning while trying to lift the dolly had ripped open the flesh exposing the bone in my thumb. I don"t believe You can ever feel as dumb or frustrated as I did that day, unless you are in a simular position. Thank God the little old lady next door heard me after 10 minuets had passed. She got her boy to come over and get my floor jack so he could set me free. He was doing a good job until he saw my thumb and lost his lunch just barely missing me in the process. The bone didn"t break so a good cleaning and lots of stichtes later I now have a constant reminder how easy stupidity can set upon an old fart like me. Careful and slow is my new motto. Also use at least 4 jack stands!!

Someone I know is an Emergency Room Nurse and I suppose he has seen it all. What drives me up the wall is his no regard comments to patients that pass-on in the ER. His common response is " When its your time, its your time "..... This drives me up a wall for many reasons. When you look into reasons for such a passing, it is usually because the individual, DID something, or MISSED something, or DID NOT prepare something so the forces of nature took over. Mother Nature has a Hull of an attitude sometimes.
Now I am a God fearing soul and I pray to his good graces most the time. But I do believe God gave us a brain for a very good reason, those of us that are able to, are suppose to use that brain and keep our selves out of harms way, protect our selves, build, preserve, store, in short, we have to THINK for ourselves and we have that ability, long programmed from our youth and growing up to adults.
I have seen a person crushed, actually several. A friends brother was crushed when he went under a hospital washing machine to do something that would " just take a sec ", the lift failed and it came down on top of him.
Me and Gatsbys' CRUISER have an understanding, it don't come down and I don't go under unless it is blocked up first.
After I read about " there is nothing lower than a GMC when the bags fail " I looked at the frame and I agree, the frame will hit the ground, leaving little room for little needed operations for me, like BREATHING.
Now I know most of us are older, knowlegable, and set in our ways campers, and we are getting a lot of NEWBIES who have no idea how dangerous the GMC can be when being disassembled, or not. The idea is, if you are too lazy to block the frame when going under, front or rear, then don't do the job.
Everyone has their own opinions, and some are hard headed enough to think that they can get away with a couple seconds under the frame....... No NO NO!! Don't do that!
keep in mind, BLOCK IT, DON'T ROCK IT.
LarC ( Keeping Gatsbys' CRUISER in the air when I am working under her is PRIORITY ONE ! )

Matt, I agree with you 100 percent. We have to learn from our mistakes and thank God that we survived them. I think my worst enemy now is becoming complacent and making the lazy decision at times. I would never consider getting under the GMC without blocks or jack stands but that little 800 pound tow dolly just wasn"t very intimidating. (OR so I thought!!) In all my years of repairing automated production machinery I"ve seen some horrible things that I never want to witness again.

I beg to differ.
While I still catch myself creating, or maybe realize later, that I was creating a dangerous situation, I am much more careful than I was when I was young and invincible.

Interesting topic
A lifetime ago, I managed Workers' Compensation claims.
Over a period of almost 9 years, I probably handled 10 or 12 hand/multiple finger amputations by carpenters using power saws. Similarly, I handled 10 leg crushing injuries to mechanics qho got pinned by jumping cars (usually doing tune-ups in gear)
Without exception, the 20+ injured fellows were LONG EXPERIENCED (more than 20-years each) - NOT ONE ROOKIE in the entire bunch. Each guy I interviewed said (in effect) they had done the particular task (that caused their injury) so often "they could do it in their sleep" and one moment of inattention (a new guy might be more careful/cautious/scared) bit 'em.
Be very leery of jobs / tasks you've done a million times!

An 11-year-old boy died recently here in Utah after the car he was working
on with his 16-year old brother fell off the jack.
Be careful out there.

Any time I'm parked for more than a few minutes I put in the "Tail Stand" (jack stand) just in case a bag blows or I gotta crawl under for some reason. Yeah I bang my shin on it when it's sitting in front of the fridge waiting to be used, but when I'm using it, I'm glad it's back there. It won't hold the coach up probably, but it will give me a couple of seconds to get out of the way.
Nothing on these coaches is worth getting hurt or killed over.

My coach is in the driveway on a set of 4x4 blocks arranged to keep the rear end up. Support is under the boggies/frame. Coach cannot drop at the rear and I take the load off of the air bags. Works for me.
Actually, I did this to spread the weight of the coach over several square feet of the asphalt driveway, helps keep from denting the driveway.
