I know some of you have done this so I need to find out what works best.
I recently took my 77 Palm Beach up to Tahoe and we had fuel delivery
problems that I had to fix on the side of the road.
I believe I had a couple of problems.
First was a pinched fuel line from the main tank. Fixed that
Second I believe was vapor lock, never had it before but had all of the
symptoms of it.
Third I was able to achieve a whole 35 MPH over the pass. My engine my be
on its last legs so I plan to do a compression check and go from there.
So my question, If my engine is not dieing a slow death, what is the best
fuel throttle body that has been installed so far. I have seen the FAST
system and self tuning sounds very nice. Has any one done this?
If my engine is dieing how hard is it to put in a rebuild through the top or
through the bottom?

How to pull the engine depends on what equipment you have available.
Pulling out the top requires a special hoist.
Pulling out the bottom requires lifting the coach in the air.
I found a hoist so I pulled out the top. Went really easy I felt, not much harder than pulling an engine out of a normal car.

I have attended some classes on after market fuel injection and my opinion is the Fast system has some design problems that affect the low speed atomization of fuel. I don't believe it would be my choice. The new Holley self learning systems are a better choice for our GMCs. One of their test vehicles is an old Chevy Suburban 454 so it is not just for 3000 lb Camaros. I have a Turbo City TBI and it is great, it was put on by the PO. If I were doing it today I would do the new Holley system.

If you are living in California, be very careful with the 77. It is under smog rules forever. You can put on the TBI and take it to a smog referee at a Jr. College to test for Modified Vehicles. If the company you purchase the TBI from does not have an Executive Order you will _not_ get it smogged. The EO means the company has had their system tested by CA. So, before you buy, make sure the company has jumped through the hoops. Smog law does not care if the rig is putting out less smog. They will not even put it on the dyno. They will only be happy if it has an EO. I do not believe a self-learn system will pass EO qualifications as it can be altered.

I was hoping that sooner or later they would move the date form 75 to 80 but
I guess that is not going to happen.

My question also, where are you located Cameron?
There are 2-3 different fuel injection systems floating around, throttle
body. It might depend on where you are and what kind of support you may need
to figure out which system you may want to purchase. Mine is the old Holley
Projection, analog. I am now gathering parts to upgrade it so I can watch
what it is doing on my laptop. I have had only one problem with my old
system, TPS went bad. I got a new one at Autozone and off we went.
Give us a little more information. Might be someone near you with a hoist to
lift your engine out. There are several scattered around.

You might want to take a look at these guys, they have a complete system with GM components. You want a complete system, one that will control both fuel and spark, and you want a vss input (speed sensor) to the ECM also. If you are thinking about no spark control or speed input, forget it, you will not even have half a system. The spark control and speed input are what really makes the TBI come alive, and then go to a EBL ECM and you really have control of many inputs and parameters.

Forgot the reply...
Cameron, I replaced the engine with a rebuilt one from Applied GMC. If you get it rebuilt there, and the shop is slow,(we borrowed it a weekend in winter between jobs) they may let you borrow the trolley to remove from inside. It was fairly simple and after all the unbolting the engine went from the compartment to the driveway in 15-20 min. That being said... we had a HUGE knock and knew the motor was bad. You acheiving only 35 on a high altitude mountain pass seems kinda normal. How does it run at sea level? it is 12,000 pounds with a sports car drivetrain ;)haha
