On the last trip out, my compressor motor turned toes up. My compressor was put in by a PO. It is my understanding, from talking with local club members, that Darcy Moses built AND installed the unit on what is currently my coach. My questions: has anyone who has one of these units on their coach had a similar problem? If so, did you find a suitable replacement motor? Did it fit in the space allotted with minimal modifications?

Thanks.

What failed? The motor or the compressor itself?

I've been wanting to do a york system like Darcy did but the motor is hard to come by, not to mention it's a ways down the priority list.

If it's the compressor, yorks are around.

Don't toss the system if you decide not to use it. If nothing else there are parts I'd want.

Jim,
On the york compressor units Bill Bramlet makes he uses
starter generators like the ones used in golf carts. I bought
one off of Ebay that I used on mine.

The starter motor Darcy used was from the small 4cyl GM cars. He had to make a new end plate to hold the bearing on the drive end. The armature shaft was modified to accept the pulley. Sounds like the golf cart starter/generator would make an excellent replacement.

I had an old Onan starter motor that had a bad gear tooth.
I cut off the bell housing on the end (aluminum casting) so that I could mount a pulley but that contained the shaft bearing. So I fashioned a plate to bolt to the end and put in a small 1/2" ball bearing to hold that end of the shaft.

I can post pictures if anyone wants them.

Charles, that"s one hell of a compressor you have there. Kinda reminds me of an old story about using a sledge hammer to kill a piss ant.. Laughing Laughing I use 2 of the harbor freight cheapo models. One is mounted under the drivers side fender and the other in the origional spot by the closet. With the new 4-bagger from Jim only 90 lbs. gets my coach to the proper height..

What happened was the solenoid froze which caused the motor to run continuously. It either popped the safety valve, a fitting or a hose and ran till the motor burned up. The compressor itself is in great shape and is staying right where it is. Dead flat empty to full up in less than 90 seconds is hard to beat.

So, which golf cart starter did you use??
Some only draw 15 amps which seems low for a compressor of that size

I don't know which starter/generator I used. I tried to read the tag
but I can not read a lot of it where it is positioned.
Because of where it is located all I can read on the unit is Columbia
ParCar, made in Deerfield WI. part number 30083-95, 12 volt.
There is other information but I have not been able to read it.
There is a John Deer tractor starter/generator on Ebay right now
I think the last bid was 37.00. has 2 hours to go.
