Just my two cents worth on tire lifespan with the previous discussion on
date codes and longevity.

I just my tires in to be unmounted and transferred to another set of steel
rims. Tires are 6 years old and have 7000 miles on them, and the ones that
were in the middle have almost no wear on them at all.

As soon as the guy started taking the off the rim, you could see where dry
rot was forming right at the edge of the tread on the sidewall. I never
would have seen it if the tire was mounted or full of air.

Since I've already experienced the blow out and potential blow outs, I'm
putting 6 new tires on.

Of course as with anything to do with the gmc, you can't just put tires on
without struggling with all the decisions:
Do I go to 16" wheels?
If I do, do I go ahead and by Alloys?
Can I afford this???
Am I crazy?

No, you are not crazy.

And it is not just GMC motorhomes either. My parents go from Michigan
to Florida each year in their 40 foot motorhome for the winter.

Last April their neighbor in Florida returned north and just north of
the Florida border they had a blowout on their right front tire. They
went off the road and hit a tree. The wife was killed. The motorhome
was totaled.

The tires were 7-1/2 years old.

Pete,
Lack of use seems to be a factor along with high load.
Motor homes are always fully loaded, never empty like our company trucks. We
run junk ties on them with no problem as they are used daily and run fully
loaded only 15% of the time.
I have seen them running the tires almost flat for a period of few days and
never a problem.
Maybe I should have them run the MH tires on the truck when its going to sit
for few month.
Pete, We are running a special on the American Eagle Alloy wheels along with
a 40% discount on freight for those on Eastern Standard Time and 20% off for
those on Central Time Zones.
