Today I put a new outer boot on the passenger side. I had to remove the
stub axle before I could remove the outer axle. I, too, had problems
keeping the boot grease free and on the CV joint while I tried to band the
boot. Took me about 3 hours, but not working very hard or fast. I
finally figured out where the circlip was (buried in grease); once I found
it, the CV joint came off easily. I was in my garage and the temps were in
the 60's.

this operation. I didn't have any trouble with the axle nut or the six
flange bolts. I removed the unit by having the driver's side wheel all the
way to the left. I took it out over the front cross bar (jacking point)
and seemed to go pretty easy. My main trouble was getting the new boot on
over the CVJ. I took the bearing cage out and just slipped the boot on the
axle and then put the CVJ/bearing back on. I had some difficulty keeping
the boot clean and getting it onto the CVJ. It went back in the same way I
took it out; just requires some care and slight moving of the disk/knuckle
assembly itself. All in all, it took about a full day, but spread over
several as it got pretty hot in the garage with temps up to 100 degrees.
Thanks to Jim K. for parts and conversation. Thanks also to Steve Fergusen
who told me that I would need that sack of new flange bolts some day! So,
I bought them!
