Follow the links to the picture albums:

<http://www.fmca.com/index.php/join-family-motor-coach-association/stories/270>

Some are nice, some are boxes and some are just ugly. There are one or two that are cute.

All are interesting.

Story of the pictures is good too.

"I read it for the articles." Smile

The Flxible Fun Cruiser was actually well appointed on the inside. They had
a interior that rivaled Air Stream "back in the day".

the father of a friend was a design engineer for Airstream but left in 1970 when they stopped using wood for the interiors. he started a company call Mobilux that was a Chevy step van conversion. he still has one; looks similar to some of those pictured.

Thanks for posting the link! Very enjoyable. I would own an RV museum with an RV park in a major city if I had $$$ for the project.

I wonder if those were as difficult to drive as they were to look at.

As much as some of us sometimes complain about our GMC's handling, you'd
think their contemporaries were better. I bought a '76 Titan in '78, with
8000 miles on it. Used a Dodge 440 engine & 400 series (IIRC) chassis, with
beam front axle. That darned thing not only rode and drove like the truck
it really was, it would sometimes begin to shimmy just like my daddy's old
'36 Ford 5 window coupe -- front wheels oscillating rapidly right to left
uncontrollably -- the only way to stop it was to slow down -- carefully.
New king pins (with NYLON bushings) didn't help.

I've had my GMC "jump a rut", but never do it continuously at 60 Hz+ on a
smooth road like that Dodge.

Ken, I have a 76 Titan(ic), 440 engine M400 chassis. On a nice road like the main highways in Ontario it's not bad. I have 225/70/19.5 Michelin radials on the front. Even will the old bias plys it had when I bought it about 25K miles ago it has never done the shinmmy. I read some of the Ford RV chassis do it. I wonder if the beam axle/kingpins has something to do with the shimmy???????

Dave,

Don't sneeze while driving the Titan. It might trigger the shimmy. :-)

Steve: In the late 70's friends and I rented a 21' Winny, one year old, on a Dodge platform. The most difficult thing to drive I ever experienced. We would take 3 hour shifts, at most, and then had to stop and switch drivers. It simply wondered all over the road and had to be "driven" every moment of every mile. We soon called it Lurch, as that is what it did. Simply awful.

My SOB was a MALLARD "B" class motorhome with the big 400 engine.

This was a truck chasis with a box on the frame and it rode like a truck.... no surprise.

It was a nightmare to drive down the road. The front end would dance all over the road and if you tried to tow a car, it would swing across the lane.

NOW, I do know that the swing was due to the front end losening up and the rear springs weakening. The vehicle just was not designed well and the suspension would weaken and fail early. I assume this is the cause of all the trouble on all these other MH's as well. It is a chore to keep them up if it re-occurs frequently.

I remember taking it into the shop for the last time and told him to look at the front end. He came back and said the entire front end was worn out and the rear springs had collapsed...lol...It was retirement time.........

I put a lot of miles on that old SOB, a lot of money too. but I kept some parts, the NORCOLD REFER is in the GMC now LOL, I do like that NORCOLD>>>>

Some of these old buses, like the Crystal Bril and Crown,  had a horizontal flat
six cylinder in the center of the bus. Windows in the back of this bus suggests
this might be the case.

I have a friend here in Sierra Vista who is restoring an old Flexible.
It has a straight 6, Jimmy, I think. He's got the engine rebuilt and
when he gave me the torque numbers I was flabbergasted.

From 1939 to 1950, the pretty, 26 passenger, Flexible 'Clipper' used a modified
straight 8 Buick engine mounted horizontally in the rear.

I've ridden in many from Sacrament to Chico, and back, when I was a kid. I
really liked Trailway's Crystal Brills and always seemed to manage to get the
front seat located in front of the door.

Now I've got my own bus to play with called 'Rocinante', which in Latin means
"not a plow horse".
