[GMCnet] Power Brake Booster [message #92667] |

Brake booster question. When I was looking at Gary Berry's Master Cylinder
last night in the Kmart Parking lot in Salem, I noticed that his Booster had
two anti-backfire valves in the booster that were connected to a short piece
of hose w/a T in the middle to connect to a Vacuum source. Hadn't run across
one exactly like this one. Anyone know what it might be off of?

I have seen those two check valve boosters before. I think they were designed for applications with two vacuum sources such as the engine and an external pump. I've never seen them "T" in an original installation and I can't see any benefit to that. Sounds like it is an adaptation of a dual input booster to a single input source.

Is the booster on the GMC specific to GMC or are other applications
available that will work?
Got a notice from Cardone that they have been rebuilding certain
boosters.....

There are others that will work, Jim Bounds has one.

Yup--that's a good way to do it--make sure you use a check valve in that port.

That's the way to do it. Make sure you use a check valve in that port.

Emery, when I attended GM training at the Tigard Center back in the 80's,
there was some handouts on the delco-morraine booster and the molded plastic
check valve that goes into the grommet on the booster was described as a
multi purpose valve, one being to allow controlled escape of vacuum, and the
other being to prevent damage to the booster diaphram and other internal
parts when backfires occur in the intake system. I guess it was just me
referring to that function and not the other that led to where we are now. I
thought when I saw Gary's double valve setup that would make a dandy place
to plumb the aux. vacuum pump, and wondered if anyone out there had in fact
encountered a booster like Garys and it turns out you guys had the answer
Gary needed. The GMCnet is a living breathing critter again.

Yes I did - did you read mine? I asked about the details and you referred me to a sales page with little else but specs on the amount of effort involved to activate it, which would be fine if I was a catalog shopper. I wanted the details on *how* it is "sensitized" to achieve this effect. Is there a off-the-shelf part or component used in rebuilding the stock unit or what? If using a lighter return spring of unknown specification is the effective element in this component, then we should be privy to the specs so we can replicate the benefit.
Being largely a cheepo/do-it-yourself forum I would have expected this to be more informative than simply a source selection exercise. Or is this 'bad juju' to wonder how something was accomplished so we can learn and perhaps do it ourselves?

Booster initiates valve at 15lbs, and is fully activated at 25lbs pedal
