G'day,
I bought an Acer Aspire Netbook from Woot to carry with us on our tours of
the USA.
A computer savvy mate of mine and I worked on it for a day loading all the
programs I had on my old Gateway laptop.
Unfortunately I have run into a problem that I can't figure out how to fix.
I have Adobe Acrobat version 6 and Adobe Reader version 9.3 on the Acer.
We configured Control Panel / Folder Options / PDF / Opens with Adobe Reader
9.3 but Internet Explorer keeps trying to open them with Adobe Acrobat
version 6 and I get a message along the lines that I need version 8 or 9 to
open PDF files on the internet.
Sorry to bother you with this but I could use some help!

Go to "add - remove programs" and DELETE version 6. If it still does not work correctly, DELETE version 9. Then reinstall Version 9 again from scratch.

Acrobat and Reader ain't the same. If by "Adobe Acrobat" Rob
meant "Reader", then a delete and re-install might work
okay, and never mind.
But if by "Acrobat" he meant the full application of Acrobat
to create and edit PDFs and all that goes with it, then
removing Acrobat v.6 is going to create a headache with a
different kind of remedy, up to and including having to
reinstall with the product key and verifying with Adobe,
only then to be told...well, it can make for a long day.
I might go into a folder view, select a PDF and choose an
"Open with..." default for PDFs and see if that works. Or go
into the Control Panel/Folder Options/Files Types and scroll
down to PDF. See what the current "Opens With..." is under
Details. If it is Acrobat 6, click Change and then select
Reader v.9 (or whatever it lists). Be sure the check box
"Always use..." is checked. Click OK and see if that works.
If that doesn't work buy a Linux system (no, no... just
kidding...not that there's anything wrong with Linux).
I can't think of another software vendor that creates such
problems with its own offspring. Getting it to play nice
with siblings has frustrated me to the point of nearly
abandoning Adobe products completely (and I use AA Pro,
Distiller, Pagemaker, Framemaker, and Audition). And I can't
think of another software vendor whose user manuals/guides
are as useless and frustrating as Adobe's. I've had
concurrence on that from others in the publishing field. Ah,
but we ramble...

You have been given many good suggestions, but on my Acer netbook, I dumped IE and installed Firefox. Using it now.

Tobi,
You're correct I have both programs on my Notebook.
I also have both programs on my Desktop and they play fine together.
Whenever I click on a website PDF it is opened with Reader v.9 and NOT
Acrobat v.6.
I tried your suggestion and on the Notebook it still tries to open the file
with Acrobat v.6.
Since my Acrobat v.6 is a legal copy I will contact Adobe and see what they
say.
I do want to keep it as I use it to "print" out all kinds of stuff from the
web rather than hard copies.
Thanks to all who made suggestions.

Does IE not have a way to configure it so that mime types know what
application to launch?
On the Mac OS we can tell the OS and the browsers what applications to use
when opening files with certain extensions such as .pdf, .doc, .exl, .ppt,
.gif, and so forth.
Somewhere in the Windows registry are the instructions to do what you want
to do. Also, ActiveX, based on how it's configured, is where you instruct
the system to either load PDFs in the browser or with the Adobe product of
your preference.
Have you tried doing a Google search for your issue? Type "configure
internet explorer to open adobe reader" and see which of those links you
like. You can also use BING with great success, too.

Byron is correct about the mime types in in Internet explorer. I'm not sure about having success using Bing :0)
I can provide more assistance once I get in front of a wondoze box.
I will tell you that regardless of mime, the later version of the reader will need to be uninstalled (control panels>add/remove programs).
If you reinstall 6, make sure ALL versions of acrobat are uninstalled.
Acrobat installs printers and printer ports, so you need to make a clean start.
