There seems to be a mini-rally (6 coaches) here in Evart MI. Five came with arrangements done by someone in Great Lakers, and then we showed up and out here in left field (no power or water but the same price), but I kind of like it this way.

This is the site of the Dulcimer Festival. We learned about this amazing event from a little note in the last Great Lakers news letter. It sounded like something interesting to do - if I could get all the parts back in the coach in time to make the trek worth doing.

Well, it is. This is insane. The place is crazy with acoustic music. And how about a concert last night with about hammered dulcimers going at once. There was somebody playing something until I got to sleep. As it says on the website, this is not camping for camping's sake. There is no quiet time. Don't count on there being a quiet time. The scheduled start was Thursday, but some have been here since the week started. We did get here until late yesterday (Friday). And there is still about a day and half.

My wife (and I by default) has/been involved in the local folk music scene for the last several decades, and we never knew about this. It pays to read the chapter news letters.

Gary,
I don't even know what a mandola is, but if it is a stringed instrument, there are probably two here. One is at a vendors stand and the other will be in the evening concerts.

I didn't come prepared to record - pictures, video or music - but I will see what I can do with what I have. I came ready to keep the coach running so my wife could play with music stuff.

Matt,

I think Carol and Gordie James are at that festival. Carol is the past president of the Saguaro Jetset and plays a dulcimer. They winter in the Phoenix area. If you run across them say hello for Steve, Dan, Armand, and me.

If I run into him or Carol, it will have to be the short time tomorrow before the fair closes. But I will try to remember in the morning.
DW has crashed and I am close behind.

Hey Matt;

I'm just learning how to play the mandolin (for about 10 years
now), and the mandola is just a bit larger (I'd like one for my big
fat fingers). It's a stringed instrument. Would sure like to be there
to hear some good music. Enjoy yourselves.Wish I was there. Glad
you're enjoying the GMC.

C'mon down for the Jet Setter Rally at the Pinal county annual
Bluegrass and Fiddle festival. Outfits come from everywhere. When
they're not on stage, they're between coaches having jam sessions. I
learned more in a few hours playing with them than Iearned in years of
looking at finger charts. It is a blast. Right on I-10 between
Phoenix and Tucson. We all park together and this year I'm going to
bring a trailer load of firewood if we can have fires. Chilly that
time of year.

Hey Steve;

About what time of year is this Rally? Also, did I misinterpret
this or, did you say you're making Chilly that time of year??

Gary,
It is always the last three days in Jan. It is combined with a car
show, and tractor pull. Hard to compete with the eats the vendors
have but we always have at least one pot luck and one baggy omlet
breakfast. Join us!
On a different note, there will be at least one jam session at the
GMCWS Las Vegas rally. Jim and Cathy Stark (founder of Blackstone
Labs) plays most anything with strings, his wife is a song writer,
plays a 12 string and sings. Should be a blast and I look forward to
a "learning" session. I'm printing up a bunch of singalong stuff per
all the suggestions I got at Auburn from folks who wanted to
participate but although they knew the songs, they didn't know or
remember the words.
Chilly?

stay with the mandolin,it's a lead instrument. the mandola is hard to play tunes on because of the string layout. i play mandolin, Irish tenor banjo and concertina. the secret is practice, practice, practice. it takes some number of years to get your fingers working right.

Fred,
Gary is not kidding. At 6'5 and weight to match, the Mandola sort of
disappears in his hands. You don't even know it's there till you hear
the music.

Yep, I came from a large Grandfather that played both an F-Style 1918
Gibson mandola and one of only two known Knutsen-Dyer mandolas
(http://www.harpguitars.net/knutsen/dyermandolins.htm). He also had a
1916 Bent-Top Martin mandolin which I had a copy made for me and is
the one that Steve saw when I visited him last winter. I love playing
it, but it's small. I had the chance to play both the Gibson and the
Knutsen-Dyer for a short time when I had them both restored to what
they were like when my grandfather was playing them, but they belong
to my cousin and I had to give them back after six weeks. I liked how
much more room I had to move my fingers over the extended frets, hence
the reason I would like one. BTW, I just play for myself, so whatever
I play is always the lead, however I am trying to learn a song that
Steve has asked me to try the background. Hope to hear Fred play
sometime.

Gary, i used to have a Gibson F4 mandolin but sold it when i got into concertina. i play a 1934 Wheatstone english keyboard. i play Irish dance tunes and old time fiddle tunes. recently took up banjo and have a 1927 Vega that has the short 17 fret neck so it is tuned just like a mandolin but an octave lower. something you might consider. the neck is wider and fret spacing is wider and can be tuned however you like.
unlikely we will cross paths being on opposite sides of the country.
