Shop said water from bad radiator took out transmission. Is this possible? What is the best thing to do if I do need a new radiator?

George,

There are two coolers mounted inside the end cap on the passenger side of
the radiator, one cools the engine oil the second cools the transmission
oil.

If water from the radiator leaked into the transmission fluid cooler it
could "take out" the transmission.

To "fix" the problem you could:

1) Have the end caps on your radiator removed and have the engine oil and
transmission oil coolers cleaned, pressure checked, and repaired. The
workshop would also clean, pressure test and repair the radiator core as
well.

2) Check with Jim Bounds at the COOP (877-275-4462) for a new copper/brass
radiator.

3) Check with Jim Kanomata at Applied GMC (800-752-7502) for a new aluminum
radiator.

Rob M.

4) Plug the inlet and outlet of the offending coolers and install a LARGE
external cooler.

Sir: You should flush the cooling system before you do the radiator repair, there is a good chance there is trans fluid in the antifreeze. If you add an external cooler and plug the radiator cooler you should flush it out first with a degreaser.
Good Luck

Ken,

I'd say your response was a very good example of "thinking outside the box!"

you know I never though of the cooler breaching and coolant getting in. I have external trans cooler but it still runs through the rad, PO installed it. perhaps I should delete it and just go with the ext cooler?

Ken, could he disconnect the cooler lines and tell if antifreeze came out? that would let him know if the cooler was bad or not. maybe put a little shop air at the rad. cap; 9 or 10 pounds.

Fred,

That would be a smart move before doing anything drastic -- I'd trust
bubbles in the coolant more than the transmission shop.

Thanks once again for all the help. I am in the Dallas area and the GMC is in Oklahoma City. The radiator wholes water. The plan is to add the cooler and block off and plug the radiator connections. Any suggestions as to cooler choice and where is best to mount it?

George,

Just below the A/C condenser there's a large area of the radiator exposed.
If can add a large cooler there without contributing much heat to the
condenser. If you don't already have a full-coverage shroud on the back of
the radiator, it would be advisable to convert to that also so the fan will
draw air across that area. Frank Jenkins and Bert & Faye Curtis offer them
-- or you can order from Jim Bounds or Jim Kanomata; all the addresses are
at www.bdub.net.

For protection of the cooler and the radiator, you should have a rock guard
over that lower area also. A small rock thrown up from the road can cause a
leak down there -- I KNOW>
