I very foolishly sold my old airbags when I converted the coach to a 4-bag suspension.
Had a feeling I should have kept one, but did I?? Nooooo...

Now, even more foolishly, I've purchased a fixer coach with a leaky bag that's 900 miles away.
I'm going to need a bag or two to get it home. I'd really rather not buy new ones.

So, does anybody have a good used airbag to sell??

thanks

Wrong. Chuck sold them the other day. Got his asking price of $225, minus
shipping cost, for a good used bag.

And the Classics For Sale page is at www.gmcclassics.com/chatter/4sale.html

I use to keep a couple of spares to mail out for people in trouble. They were donated to me and when someone was in trouble I would overnight it or them to the GMCer with the understanding that they would return it in a month or so when they got their problem resolved. The kit included a used air bag (or two if necessary), new stainless nuts with stainless star washers (which they could keep), a pair of schrader valves, and a cheap 12 volt air compressor.

The last time I mailed it out, about 7 months ago, it never came back. I loaned it to someone from Michigan on his way to Florida and mailed it to an address in Georgia. Well it went poof and never returned. I have never heard from the guy again and have not been able to find him. He claimed he was going to stop at Jim B's place, get his coach repaired and return the loaner.

So I now have no spare to loan out. The last two sets of bags that were donated to me for the program were not in good enough condition to send back out. I ended up salvaging the aluminum cones and trashing the bags. I sand blasted and painted the cones and they are ready to go.

Sorry but one bad apple ruined the program. If anyone has a used bag or bags they wish to donate, please let me know and mail them to me. I have had several requests since then for a loaner that I have not been able to fill.

It's too bad about the spoilers. When Dave Posey met me in Fair Oaks to
help me look at a coach to buy he told a story about losing a bearing
puller to a guy in a similar situation.

There must be a way of finding these guys.

b.t.w. Dave Posey is a great guy, but I don't think he has email.

In the situation you describe, I consider it perfectly justified to disclose
the name and as much other information as you have about the individual.
Community condemnation, if anyone knows him, can be a powerful stimulus for
most people to "do the right thing".

Who was it?

Yup, that's plural. This has returned me to re-thinking the Black
List and it's requirements or lack thereof. While we want to assist
anyone in trouble anywhere, it's the bad apple that screws up a good
thing for everyone else.

My thoughts before were, folks on the list will help/assist others who
are on the list. I've heard all the excuses for not being on the
list, believe me but when they need help it's the first place they
look. It's not hard to just add your name for contact information only.

This might eliminate loosing loaner equipment. Thoughts?????

I suspect that the principal reason that I am on the Blacklist is related to
my first trip in my coach and a failed master cylinder on the I-5 freeway
near Federal Way, Wa. Random picked Bill Guise off the list, made a call and
20 minutes later there he was with jack, brake fluid, sympathy and a toad to
chase parts with which he willingly and cheerfully did. Stayed and helped me
bleed brakes unsuccessfully through no fault of his. (I forgot to bring my
pressure bleeder with me.) The whole experience left me with a strong sense
of guilt about taking up his time with my own shortsightedness, and a will
to repay the favor to anyone in dire straits. My wife and I joined the
Cascaders and Western States because of the experience and have been warmly
accepted into the GMC Family. That is what we consider them to be, chosen
family. It ain't up to me to judge people, but my Mom always said that there
was a special place reserved in hell for people that borrow stuff and feel
no sense of obligation to return it.

I think the Black List is a sacred institution at this point. It was a
major part of our decision to buy a 33 year old motorhome and a
foundation example of the extraordinary GMC community

Dave was awesome when I called him just to look at a candidate coach and
I'm signing up for the list to do what I can now.

Let's see what we can do to maintain it. There must be some way to
contact some of these people, assume that there's a misunderstanding and
come up with a way to make it right. ...At least for the first round.
I don't see a problem asking on the mailing list if anyone knows
"so-and-so." Again, assuming there's a miscommunication and providing
an easy fix.

Roger et al,

Unfortunately the ranks of GMC owners include all types of people. Someone in need should not be hesitant to offer to leave a deposit for spare parts/tools -- and those assisting should not be hesitant to ask for a reasonable deposit. Autozone loans tools -- with a deposit, which is often higher than the purchase pirce for the same item.

Roger, I would just leave it alone. It has worked well the way it is. Most of the people I help are not on the black list themselves. Most of the people I help are stranded locally and I meet them in person. The mail out air bags thing is the only exception. i

I'm probably not out over $40.00 total including postage.

I sent the bag kit to a name, that I will not mention, for pick up at a post office in Warner Robbins, GA. He called two days later and said he picked it up and it fixed his problem. He stated he would mail back the kit after he got a new bag installed in Florida. I have never heard from him nor have I been able to find him since.

It is no big deal to me but until someone donates a good used bag or two I will not put together another kit. I feel bad when someone calls and I have to tell them I can not help.

I was was only getting one request every three or four months.

Ken,

I remember a guy broken down there about the time you're talking about. I
also went to considerable trouble renewing old contacts in that area to try
to help him. He was sort of stand-offish and I never heard back from him
nor any indication of what happened. I'm sort of curious how he got in
touch with you when I'm probably the closest member of the Black List.

I still think you should publish the name, if only as a request "does anyone
know this so'n'so?"

Hey Ken,

On my list of future upgrades is a quad bag system. It will be a while, since my current air bags are fairly new, and I have other higher priority upgrades to do first, but when I do the switch, I'll try to remember this thread and get the old bags to you. One is two years old and the other is three or four years old. Budget permitting, I plan to make this change sometime in the next two to four years. Hopefully someone else will step up and get you back in the helping out "business" before then.
