Hey guys,

I have the above unit in my coach, it doesn't cool. I can operate it on propane or AC and the back (exhaust area -- I guess) gets hot. I assume that means that it's trying to work. What would be the next thing to check/do/replace?

Thanks in advance, apologies in advance if this has been covered already.

Has the coach got a proper upper vent to let the heat out?

Did you have the coach jacked up or otherwise not level? I had a similar experience last month where I had the rear jacked up to work on the tanks and the fridge quit on me. It got hot in the rear as normal but no cooling. It turns out that having the fridge on when the coach is not level is a bad thing and can permanently damage the unit. I got lucky. the fridge resumed normal operation once it was taken off the jackstands.

When my Dometic first did that, I was in denial and tried all of the tricks such as burping it and so on. Alas, the cooling unit had failed and I cut it up and threw it in the trash. Sometimes they can be saved but I wouldn't count on it. If the rear coils get that hot, it is most likely plugged due to internal corrosion. The other failure mode is leaking of ammonia from the cooling unit--you haven't smelled any have you?

Call Leon. He can save it. I can not locate his number but someone from Eastern States will have it. You can talk with him on phone. He will diagnose and send you parts. Then, he will talk you thru install. Can't beat that and he is inexpensive. Located somewhere around Shipsewana, In.

Norm, there is a proper upper vent.

Mike, the coach was recently on jackstands but the problem pre-dates that.

Bob, the rear coils don't get hot, just the exhaust.

Dan, that sounds exactly like what I need!

Thanks for the responses!

Hey Len,

Thanks for the offer of help. All I know and can tell you is that the unit
hasn't worked for at least a year. The exhaust gets hot when it's run on
propane or AC. The AC light appears to be burned out. The check light
works, but doesn't come on during operation. The unit doesn't cool, top or
bottom. It has a large proper vent in the roof that does not appear to be
plugged as you can feel heat escaping.

Thanks again.

We had the same problem this weekend as we were traveling to the
Oregon Coast. Once we got to the campground, the wife and I pulled the
refer out of the coach and turned it upside down on the camp table.
Left it there over night. In the morning, we turned it back over and
heard a bunch of gurgling going on, then reinstalled it. Fired it off,
and it immediately started getting cold. Took all day for the temp to
get to 0 in the freezer, and 36 in the refer, and it's running great
now. I think I just need to keep it level when I have it running (I
usually leave it running at home, but the coach is never level there).

running it out of level is what messes them up. even just a little out is enough to make it stop working. i read somewhere if a level is past the mark that is too far off. the newer units can stand an bit more.

I'm usually a positive person, but I did that and it was temporary. There are corrosion related deposits in there that will find a way to clog it once again.
