I have been a long time reader and first time poster. The issue with old
tires is that the ozone in the air attacks the rubber over time and causes
the tire casing to deteriorate. This can usually be seen by cracking or
checking of the rubber in the sidewall portion of the tire. The problem
arises when you drive a period of time the tire will tend to fail from
excessive heat generated while driving at a steady highway speed. This is
why manufacturers are starting to give a time expiration on their warranty.
As far as the 'old' Michelin date referenced there are a couple of issues to
keep in mind. When a tire dealer buys inventory he either purchases it from
the manufacturer or from a 'WD' (Warehouse Distributor). If it comes from a
WD then it could have sat in his warehouse for a period of time and then it
could also sit in the dealer's inventory for a period of time also. This
size we use is not a high volume size so it helps to look to buy from a high
volume dealer and also check the date code on the sidewall of the tire
before installation. The last three digits of the serial number tell the
story. The first 2 are the week the tire was produced and the last number
is the year. An example serial would be: DOT EMF5DNA2207. The last 3
numbers are 207 so this tire was made the 20th. week of 2007. Hope this
