To remove the left(driver)side drive axle to change the CV joint rubber boot which is cracked, the "book" says to remove the knuckle. As this is a pain in the arse and I already am changing the heads-another pain in the arse-I am looking for alternative answers. Your comments are welcomed........Thx, Michael

It is possible to remove it without pulling the knuckle. It takes some jockying and truning of the steering wheel but you will find it isn't too bad.

It is possible to remove it with loosening the knuckle. I find it easier for me to just undo the nuts on the upper ball joint and the tire rod end. Then the knuckle will pivot out of the way giving me plenty of room to remove the axle.

I have friend coming here in the morning to replace a piece of frame that mounts one of the rear leaf springs on his Ranger. His approach was to try to work around the bed and gas tank to get the frame rivets out. My approach tomorrow is to remove the bad and possibly the tank. It will be much easier to get to the rivets which I will air chisel off in a couple of minutes.

The bed is only held on with 6 bolts and I'll pick it up with my John Deere. Two people can also lift the bed.

He worked on it all day today and got nowhere.

BTW, broken leaf spring mounts are a common failure on a Ranger. Our local Ford dealer had three sets in stock as did our local AutoZone.

My point is there is usually more than one way to do the job but getting the interfering parts out of the way sometimes is much simpler tan trying to work around them.
