I'm trying to find the timing tab on my 455. I can see the mark on the harmonic balancer, but can't see the timing tab anywhere. I'd appreciate any help telling me where I should be looking. What are the current recommendations for setting the timing? 10 BTDC?
Thanks,

The red part on the front of my motor. Yours will NOT be red, of course...

Then again... this is a '73. Who knows where it is on the later coaches.

it's really hard to see and to get a timing light on but look down the left front of the engine from the top. time at 10 deg. BTDC

it is plastic, and could have broken off in the distant past... It is held on by one bolt, so it can be replaced.

You are going to love finding it.

FIRST.

Take a white paint marker or white out and mark the line on the harmonic balancer.

Then go inside and completely remove the hatch cover. Position yourself all the way in front of the engine and look straight down. With the timing light going you should see the white line flashing at you. The indicator will be right under the white line. It is difficult to see and and you must be on top looking straight down.

If the timing is way off and the engine is running OK, Do NOT change it. You probably have a slipped harmonic balancer rather than the engine being out of time. One an HEI there is no reason for the timing to change once it was set correctly. On a points ignition it could change some if the points block wore some.

Also make sure you have the vacuum line to the distributor advance disconnected and plugged prior to checking and setting the timing.

As far as the crappy plastic version of the timing tab goes I got a metal version off of a non Toro 455 that worked really nice.
