JoAnne, Did you paint it a contrasting color? Do you have any pictures to share?
I am thinking of using the Dark Grey in one wide stripe plus leaving the two thin Burgundy stripes.
I had thought about bringing the Grey all the way down to the bottom stripe, just don't know if that would be too much. Wish I knew how to use Paint shop pro <vbg> Heck, I could then play around with all kind of ideas.
Kelvin, Do not know about others, these look like brushed Aluminum that was then primed with the green stuff, cannot think of its name now, and then painted the same color as the Coach. If I paint and leave the Rubber off, I will fill the Screw heads first.
Should give a nice clean look.

Richard,
There is also this kind:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=33035&title=2010-04-03-11-07-54&cat=5429
They can be seen from the front and rear as well as from the sides.
Sealed units.
There are at least 50 different rub rail designs that fit over that
aluminum and the coaches I've seen without it look odd. Take that
alum strip off and clean up underneath it or you'll have corrosion
showing up later on.

The side marker lights you linked are similar or the same as some that I tried on my coach. I found them to look out-of-place on the GMC. Oval marker lights compete with the linear side rail shape. I replace those with rectangular marker lights a little more similar to the ones Steve Ferguson used.
As to the rub rail, I have seen coaches attempt to remove it altogether, but that is a risk. That side rail is the joint between SMC and aluminum, and they will move against each other to some extent. Any body filler you used to establish the shape without the aluminum strip would eventually crack.
I have also seen coaches that painted right over the aluminum strip after using an appropriate body sealer around its edges. But I have to say that the coach benefits from a defined waistline. Steve Ferguson again demonstrates that approach, using the waistline as a color-change line. That looks really nice, and I intend to steal his design when I finally get the coach painted. At present rate, that ought to be in about 2030.
Some paint jobs didn't replace the rail, but did paint the aluminum strip a contrasting color to establish the waistline, and that looks very nice, too.
As with all aesthetic decisions, however, the only requirement is that you like the result.

I did not mean to imply remove the Aluminum strip, just not replace the rubber rail.

Now the remaining Aluminum Strip looks pretty good, have it all sanded and ready for paint.

What year is your coach?????
I have a 74 Glacier and the SS rub rail does not look like that.
There is an indent where the rubber goes and screws along the center.....
Yours looks like an aftermarket, something like what Jim B uses when he paints a coach and takes the rub rail off.

However, not all of them have the built-in bridge to allow double polarity.
The LEDs are diodes, and the front corner lights on a GMC pull the electrons through in one direction for running lights, and in the other direction for turn signals. The result is that regular LED units only work for one or the other. The solution is to install a typical Radio Shack 30-amp "bridge rectifier" (just like the ones KenHen sells for the Onan), and feed the two factory wires to the "AC input" lugs. The LED marker light is then fed from the "DC out" lugs on the rectifier. It's easy, but you need access to the inner panel on the front to make it work. Most have that when replacing the side trim in any case.
Here are the lights that I used:
http://www.buytruckstuff.com/product.asp?selcategory=34&p_gpID=139
Unlike several that I looked at, these have built in retro-reflectors. It seems rather important to me to provide these reflectors--they really make the coach visible from the side in the dark. Also, the factory marker lights included retro-reflectors.
But do not expect any of the product descriptions to tell you whether they have retro-reflectors. One that says it has reflectors are for the LEDs, not retro-reflectors. They look like they are painted black at night when you shine a light on them.
These are a full 2" wide and take up the whole width of 2" aluminum stripping.

The MDB units on that page only show 1 wire. Maybe they have changed the specs since you purchased yours.

I plan on filling mine, besides using SS. I sure like the Blue Coach, wonderful colors. Just how many do you have? I see 3 so far.
