Hey all,

Kathy and I are in the early planning stages for a trip to Salt Lake City, in October. We are planning the trip in a way that will allow us to attend the last three days of the GMCWS rally in Las Vegas. We are looking for a nice RV park in the Salt Lake area. We will have a towed, so anything within reasonable driving distance of the downtown area would be preferable. She wants do do some genealogy research at the Mormon Library.

We have read mixed reviews about the Salt Lake KOA and the Pony Express RV Resort (the two with the biggest ads in "Woodall's".

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you do not get a response, contact GMCer John Brewer (N7AFQ) in Salt Lake City. He knows the area well and is a very helpful GMCer. Last fall while passing through I stopped to have dinner with him and his wife. I also talked to him about 2 weeks ago on the phone.

Carl, I live just north of Salt Lake City. You have several choices.

About four years ago, I lived in the Salt Lake City KOA for about six months
when we moved out here and were looking for a house. The bathrooms are
clean and the staff is friendly. The only problem I had with it is that the
trains coming through nearby would blow their whistles at all hours. This
was supposed to change though. The KOA is the most convenient to the
genealogy library since it is just a few miles away, though it might take
you a few minutes longer to get to the library because they're rebuilding a
bridge on North Temple that crosses over railroad tracks into downtown.

The Pony Express is a newer park and seems nice, but it doesn't have any
large shade trees like the KOA. Also, they have a "10 years old or newer"
RV rule, though I have occasionally seen older RVs parked there. It is next
to a freeway as well. On a GMC note, there's a small wrecking yard just
down the street from the Pony Express whose owner has a '77 23' GMC
Birchaven for sale. According to David Greenberg, it was the first 23' GMC
to roll off of the assembly line with the 403.

There are two other RV parks about 15-20 miles north of Salt Lake City.
Cherry Hill is about 20 miles north in Kaysville and is part of a quaint
little recreation area that has an old west village, water slides, and mini
golf. Never stayed there though, so I can't say anything to the quality of
the RV park. Lagoon is an amusement park in Farmington a few miles away
from Cherry Hill and has an RV park next to it as well.

South of Salt Lake, Provo has a KOA that I've never stayed at, but my
parents have stayed at the the Lakeside RV Campground (
http://www.lakesidervcampground.com/) many times and love it. Provo is a
bit more of a drive from Salt Lake City though.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Bryan,
I don't know how those RV parks manage to persuade the railroads to
move their tracks so close. I don't think I could sleep in a park
that doesn't have a train going by at all hours.
Like the guide book said when asked about trains, "the railroads own
the tracks and like to use them whenever they want".

We just stayed at the Richfield, UT KOA and it was very nice. The park was clean and shady, but access to other amenities (like restaurants) was limited. It's about 2 hours south of SLC.

We also stayed there two months ago. Nice park but it's location sure
wreaked havoc with out GPS. It was very hot and those huge shade
trees were a blessing.

Thank you all for the information. We will continue to digest this information and contact people as needed to make a decision.

Based on Bryan's post, Pony Express deserves another look (I could lie convincingly about the GMC's age). I think the negative reviews were mostly due to construction that was going on at the time of the reviewers stay. If that is done, it might be OK. Also, we would definitely consider the locations North of SLC. Provo is a little far away for what we have in mind.

Thanks again,
