Hi all
I have noticed, when the GMC Air is on there is a lot of vibration in the
belt especially at idle.Will this cause a problem?
Has anyone used an idler pulley to dampen the oscillations?
I have the smaller pulley on the compressor.
I thought with the smaller pulley there would be less occupations at idle...

Paul,

A smaller pulley on the compressor makes it spin faster, requiring more
horsepower to be transmitted through the belt. But you knew that. :-)

I'm not sure how a V-belt would react to a spring loaded idler like those
used for serpentine belts. Which belt I had to install today on the farm's
36,324 mile '93 F-150 before taking it on a 200 mile trip tomorrow.

Ken ,you are correct,
When I got the Compressor home to install ,I noticed the smaller Pulley and I thought it will give me more Cooling at low speeds,especially at idle and it seems to work that way.
A lot of the Vibration goes out as RPM increases.

Paul;

The belt vibration at slow rpm is caused by pulsations from the 'wobble box' compressor, and as you have found out, as rpm's increase, the pulsations even out and the belt runs smoother. The long length of the belt does not help the flopping either, at low rpm's.

You might try slightly tighter tension or slightly faster idle speed to get out of the harmonic that has set up at that length, speed, and tension. (all you guitar players can relate I'm sure)

I really wouldn't worry about it.It's very common not only on the GMC but thousands of vehicles with V belt drives. Just make sure it is good and tight on the "top" side".
