I traded emails with John Bell, the fine gentleman who was stranded
in Wisconsin Dells with a blown final drive. He reports that he is
still mobile and plans to be home in Montreal by Friday. I did a
postmortem on his 3.07 today and found 3 teeth in a row broken from
the pinion. Also when I pulled the pinion out of the housing the front
pinion bearing rollers fell into the housing. The bearing cage for
some reason had failed. I think the saga started with this cage
failure which allowed the rollers to "bunch up" which caused the
pinion teeth to get out of alignment with the ring gear teeth. This
caused the harsh wear on the very outside edge of the ring gear and
also caused "point loading" on the pinion teeth. The point loading
caused the teeth breakage.
I certainly agree with Larry's comments about how hospitable and
appreciative this couple were. Speaking of Larry, he is no stranger to
tools and GMC motorhomes. He is also no stranger to helping members
when they have problems. It was great to have his help when changing
this final drive in the parking lot of a motel.
