What is it about ceramic paper that makes it a good solution to the fuel
tank heating problem? It appears that the R-value isn't as good as some
alternatives, so what is the appeal? See
http://www.mcmaster.com/#catalog/116/3482/=7pw8yr
for some comparisons.

I bought enough ceramic paper from McMaster Carr to do both tanks.
When it arrived, I cut a swatch from the roll and put my hand under it
while I heated the opposite side with a torch. Paper got red hot, did
not burn my hand underneath. Hardly the duty it will see on the
underside of my tanks, but I've always been a "doubting Thomas" about
things like this.

what about just spraying on the foam stuff you get at Home Depot? it's cheap, easy to use and easy to re-apply if it gets chipped off.

Fred,
That stuff seems to deteriorate when exposed to the elements. I
suppose you could spray an undercoat on it.

So that would seen to prove that ceramics don't conduct heat and they also
reflect heat waves since the air around that torch must be pretty warm. But
we don't normally have a conduction problem and convection is going to bathe
the tanks in the ambient air unless we insulate the entire tank, so maybe
the best we can do is to add reflecting material. It seems to me that white
aluminum siding or white paint is about as good as it is going to get. Maybe
white paint with ceramic microspheres and aluminum leaves would be better,
but how much?
