I finally broke down and bought an LC-1 with an analog gauge, $199 from Amazon.
Running around on a test drive it was consistently below 14:1, like 13.8 or so until I put my foot in it, then it leaned out, well to just about 14.25. Kinda backwards, dang it.
I just rebuilt the carb and noticed it had 72 jets in it. So I guess I'll pop in a set of 70's and see how it goes.
Pretty neat watching the A/F ratio working.

Should go way rich when you put your foot into it. Like 12:1
Sounds kinda like a stuck power piston. Make sure its moving freely before you go changing the jets to smaller ones.
Had that problem in mine a few weeks ago.

I am coming at this from the fuel injection angle, but we get real nervous about burning valves and pistons on a long pull when wide open throttle (WOT) is higher than 13. Most setups called for 12.8 for WOT. The extra gas cools the combustion chamber. (Yeah, you would think auto manufactures would think of another way to cool the chamber... especially when tractors and airplanes were using water injection 80 years ago.)
As suggested, check the power valve.

wow, then this WB o2 may just pay for itself in burned valves!

I have an LC-1 in my mustang. Worth its weight in gold. It can really tell you when somethings up in the fuel system...

I think I found mine on e-bay... new. The company is Innovate.
http://www.innovatemotorsports.com/
It involves having a bung (threaded gizmo) welded into your exhaust. I have Thorley Headers and put mine in the "stub" pipe just about at frame level. Some say that is too close, too hot. It has been fine there. When you get the Lambda Cable, get the Wide Band O2 sensor with it.
There are lots of gauges, and you will need one that works with the LC-1. I had a digital and that sucker flickered around so fast it was really hard to read. Perhaps the quadrajet is more even. With fuel injection it is sampling exhaust and changing the mixture faster than one can imagine. Now I have it piped into a complete display so I know what fuel, spark, knock (pings) and much more that are doing. I have the report slowed down and Air/Fuel still jumps around a bit.
I should add that there are other companies making A/F setups. Not sure cheaper is always better.

Just a side note on that point....AEM now makes clamp on O2 sensor mounts that only require you to drill a hole in the pipe. Real handy if you don't have access to a welder. They run about $30 and can be ordered from Summit.

I got mine from amazon, $199 for the Lc-1, an analog gauge and sensor. The analog guage is really nice, very smooth.
And Larry is right. I welded mine on after the collector and yes it overheated. It seemed ok after it cooled down, but I'll have to move it
