Try contacting Steve Southworth (midlf on the GMC list). I don't think he's too far from the Wisconsin Dells, and I believe he has a parts coach.

Actually, Steve is not all that close, but he is on the Black List, so try him on his cell, 262-501-4566. There is also a fellow named Bill McCain that is listed (262-215-9447) that may be able to help.

If these don't pan out, try searching the Black List

Best of Luck! At least there's lots to do in the Dells if you have to be stuck somewhere.

John got in touch with me and I have a 3.07 I can make available. Unfortunately for bad timing I am working nights this week so I can not be personally involved. Otherwise I would have been able to toss the FD in the truck with some tools and jackstands and we coulda "got er dun"

I've tried to get in touch with Erspamer, Lopez, Feggestad, and Derr off the Black List to see if they had any ideas or could help in some way. However it is a Friday night in WI and between the traditional Fish Fry Friday and all the summer activities no one is home. Maybe there will be some hits later tonight.

Is Larry Weidner of Menomonie within a reasonable distance? He may know of a source.

Just saw the postiing. I have a 3.08 FD you can use, or we can contact John Biwersi for a 3.21. He rebuilds them and always has one on hand. Call me at home.

John - I sent you a PM.

Larry is about 150 miles from the Dells, I'm about 100 miles in the other direction. One way or another this will get done. Geez I hope you weren't traveling on I-94 as you would have driven right by LarryW's place.

John...we are all unhappy to hear of your plight...
that having been said, my best advice is to hang on to get Jinny K 's 3:70's.
I went from stock 3:07's to His 3:70's with my 403 and cant believe the difference...MUCH more power off the line and up these west coast mountains. My 2 cents worth.

The 3.70s are great if you are towing. If you have been wanting lower gears, then now would be the time. On the other hand...

We have had a 3.55 and a 3.07, both 455s. I love our coach with the stock 3.07s. It is a cruiser. We towed 2300lbs over the Grapevine no sweat with 3.07s. (It runs almost 50 at 3K RPMs in second gear.) The jump to 3.70s is close to 20%. But then I am a guy who wishes he had an overdrive and a lockup converter.

I also think about the fact that an engine with 120K miles on it with 3.07s has turned the same number of times as a 3.70 at 100K miles. Our 64 Riveria with 4.11s is pretty tired at 138K miles. 3.07s would put that mileage at about 102K miles and then it wasn't burning oil and the lifters weren't clacking.

John Biwersi (JB) and I packed up things and headed for the Dells about 10:00am Saturday. By 1:00 we were hard at it. John Bell (JBe) we found out was a mechanic himself, having worked for Rolls Royce on their Jet engines for many years, so he was a BIG help!! Took about 1 1/2 hrs to get it out. Opened the cover and found two teeth missing from the pinion and laying in the bottom of the pan. (I've never seen that!!) Those teeth did some damage to the ring gear while floating around in there, Also found the drivers side output shaft bearings loose enough that the plate moved about 1/4" laterally. All in all a pretty messed up FD and a good diagnosis by JBe. JB closely directed the install of the new 3.21. Put a couple of bolts with heads cut off in the trans to use as guide pins. Took the FD pan off, set it on a floor jack and raised it up. Raise it a little...line it up...raise a little more, eyeball it. push toward the trans...line it up...raise a little...push...raise...line up...raise...down a little...CLUNK!!...just lie that it was in!! sometimes the slower you go, the faster you go. By 5:30 or 6:00 we were done....a little greasy....no, a LOT greasy!! All in all, JB is a EXCELLENT mechanic and good to work with, JBe also a good mechanic and contributed a lot to the job. JBe has about 1000 miles to cover today to get home, so we should know by tomorrow morning how the FD is...not that I'm worried. John Biwersi does an excellent job of rebuilding the 3.21! The only fly in the ointment...I walked in the door about midnight last night to a phone call that I left my clothing bag in Johns truck. So looks like I'll be seeing JB again sometime next week.

John Bell and his wife are VERY nice people and really showed their appreciation for our help. I really hope we get to see them again...lovely people!!

Larry and John,
you both went out of your way to help.
Thank you.
We have seen many of the stock 3.07 pinion gears break as the rear pinion
gear wears out.
Continuing to drive after hearing noises of that amplitude is not too good
as other problems will develop.
That case is not worth rebuilding when things like this happen.

Larry, thank you guys for coming to John's assistance. As others have said, this is one heck of a group. I am always comforted to know that we have such caring and capable guys as you two. I only worry when I am driving after midnight and there is no action on the net. I just hate waking folks up for help. Shocked
