Iunderstand there is a maximum allowed clearance in the lower ball joint.  As best I could find the number is .095.  Is that correct?  Measured by putting a jack under the lower control arm and levering the tire up and down.  I'm having a hard time getting a definitive answer.  As I recall, the lower ball joints are designed to have significant clearance.  I seem to have one that is less than .095 and one that is a little more.  And these are replacement ball joints (bolted).
Thanks,
Gary Casey

Gary,

The correct method for checking ball joints is on page 3-16 of the X7575
service manual. The maximum play, checked IAW that procedure, is 0.125

A local alignment shop wanted to replace mine, with less than 1000 miles on
them, after checking by your method. Their actual clearance was a small
fraction of allowable.

Lower ball joints are not as critical as people like for you to believe.
There are more important parts to check like:
Knuckle play, inner and outer tie rods,Relay arm, idler arm and A frame
grommets.
Working on as many as we do , we get a pretty good feel on these things.
